I took a princess parrot to the avian vet today and she must be in the hospital cage for two weeks on baytril before reassessment. Out of light globes for the hospital cage so I headed off to get some....

ten stores later cant get normal light globes anywhere !!

:P :lightbulb: :lightbulb: :lightbulb: :lightbulb: :lightbulb: :lightbulb: :lightbulb:

Apparently the government has banned normal lightglobes now and from November 2009 there will be none on any shelf of any hardware store or supermarket anywhere in Australia.

You can buy the fluorescent energy saver ones but not the older style globes like this :lightbulb:

Now correct me if I am wrong, but the fluoro ones dont throw out heat that is necessary for the hospital cage to keep the birds warm. Am I right or wrong ?

I would like to think there is an alternative or do I have to rethink the hospital cage setup ?

We went from shop to shop tonight looking until I recalled a corner store that might have old stock and not yet been up on the new govt directive. We found them there so bought 20.

Anyone got any ideas ??:blink:

The other trick is to go to a pet shop and get some of the heat globes they have. If you get the smallest watt ones then you should be right with birds. I have the reptile ones for my guys that are blue and throw as much heat as the normal light globes if not a little bit more.

ETA - the blue or the black ones are great as they produce heat but not light so much meaning the bird can get some shut eye at night without the strong light on them

If worse comes to worst you can get those heat pads or other heat sources for snakes/reptiles or egg incubators. I am going to stock up on lightbulbs.

Surely there are going to be some things that cannot take those energy saver bulbs, like the lights in ovens, and those IXL bathroom fans etc. Would any of these types of bulbs work in a hospital box?

I haven't found any yet so i have had to make do with a 60watt spotlight type which is hard to direct the heat properly. :lightbulb:

You have to make sure you get the non UV ones. There are two types. Ones that throw UV and others that don't and you use them at night to that they don't throw light only heat. Sometime they are a little harder to find but a good reptile shop should be able to sell them to you, the other option is to go for the blue ones which I don't think you can get a UV one of them so you are sure to be safe

I had the same problem! About 6 months ago I was hand rearing an orphaned budgie and bought an energy saving globe to try it. Well, bloody good thing I checked the temperature of the brooder before I went to bed, cause the poor little bugger was sitting there freezing. He was fine once I changed back to the other bulb.

They don't pack anywhere near as much heat as the old style bulbs. I can understand the government wanting to change over for the sake of the environment, but what about those select few who need the old style? Phasing them out completely is unfair. They should just increase the prices to more than the energy savers to discourage people from buying the old type. But at least they'd still be available to people like us. :(

What do they look like and what are the fittings ? I would hate to modify to find shortly after these changed too.

My son has the heat globes in his reptile enclosure and when i run out of normal bulbs i will start using the heat globes. The only problem is that they cost about $15 to buy. You can buy them with a bayonet fitting or screw in fitting. We use the red ones but like Av said you can get them blue or black as well. If you get the ones that are just Heat Glo they do not have any UV in them. We have a 50watt one in the reptile enclosure and it does produce alot of heat, it is connected to a thermostat which is set at 34c so for a hospital cage i would get a low wattage heat globe.

Here is a picture of what the heat globes look like.

Agree with Deb the other ones that I have are not the screw in type and look like a normal old fashion light bulb but are just painted blue. Also some vets sell heat lamps for Budgies and small birds and you can get them in both fittings and they fit into my normal light fitting

Even reptile owners are now in search of globes, ............apparently the reptile ones are going from the shelves too. This needs more investigation :offtopic:

I have emailed Peter Garratt for an answer since it seems to have been his bright idea to rid Australia of these globes entirely. :offtopic:

There wont be any breakthroughs Splat. Once removed from shelves those shops wont have them anymore. The only place you may get some is smaller delis and small shoips and out of the way small hardware shops....once they are gone thats it.

This government direction has been on the boards for quite some time. The trouble has been that knowledge of it ans not been widely published. I have used globes in my hospital cages. I use blue ones for night lights to simulate night time. Lucky me I still had globes around and plently of blue ones which I use to sell but sadly nobody was interested in back then. I have recently (Wednesday) purchased two 6 packs of party lights to keep me going.

The reason for the banning of these bulbs is simple. The amount of energy required heat the filament inside which is what provides the light is quite high compared to the energy saving globes. Energy savers don't have filaments they are gas and so require less energy to start and maintain light. There is also the safety concern with globes as they can produce quite high heat and when used outside the intended manufacturing specifications they can cause fires. Energy savers don't produce the same heat there by making them a safer alternative.

I personally welcome the move for the sake of this planet. We had just better comes to terms with this and find another option. After all there is no other planet for us to go too. This is it peoples!
