I've used oats before and I found they absorbed the droppings and the other stuff alot better than shavings. I went off the oats because the hen would spend all day throwing it out and making a huge mess.

Nice babies as always kaz.

Very Nice KAZ. What are the benefits of using oats?

The eggs and babies dont sink in it as easily as the pine shavings. Soft but firm enough to create a good "floor" for them. Easily mouldable into a concave section. Doesnt scatter and fly into the air as easily as shavings. Keeps warmth for the chicks better than anything else I have tried. When chicks begin to pick at things in their nest, its edible. Also bored Mums in the nest can nibble something not harmful to them.

Pearce..........if you go to the deeper nestboxes like Daz makes then nothing gets thrown out...too deep and too many trips for the Mums to bother throwing stuff out of the nestbox.

A few of my hens do that too Kaz. One bites and does not let go. She is not intimidated in the slightest. She stands her ground more than any bird I've ever seen. I've come away second best a few times with that hen.

Gorgeous bubs

If you have an excess of hens i have space over here :D - lots of hens are awesome! you will never get too many :)

I like oats as nesting material. i have been told they are no good for eggs, but are great when the chicks come.

Not cheap. A kilo plain brand pack does about 4-5 nestboxes at around $1.46 per pack. I am currently negotiating a price for a 25 kilo sack from Quaker oats as you can buy the lower grade that isnt sold for breakfast eating.

What was the reason ?
