I just read KAZ's post on how to sex chicks from the nest, and I wish I learned this 2 months ago. I can't believe how wonderful this method is, MAJOR THUMBS UP ON THIS ONE KAZ!!!! :( :gday: :) As some of my hens feathered up they had not only black on their beaks (which is good) but their ceres also had black on them which made it hard to sex some of my chicks this time. I have three chicks left that I would like to find out the sexes of. I'm thinking hens??? Can anyone confirm?

My opinions. Top one looks like a hen. Second one looks like a hen. Third one The photo is not too great so I will wait for a better photo. The cere looks quite pink.

I'll try a better photo tomorrow for the third chick.

In stating that they look like hens can you tell me what you personally are looking at to make you think that? Also how can you tell on the first chick? Why does the cere on this chick (and some of my others) have black on it? I've seen it on the beaks and was told that is good (means they got good nutrition) but never saw or heard of them getting black on the cere??

Yes they sometimes get black on beak and cere I beleive its melanin or somthing. It is a good sign. It always gets in the way of sexing but oh well. First chick looks like a hen to me because the cere looks white. did you use a flash? I could be wrong but I say its a hen.

No flash... natural sunlight, I think. Here is another photo I know for sure I didn't use flash for.

okay well they are what I think, I could be wrong perhaps we should wait for kaz or someone else. The black really gets in the road for me sexing budgies. That second picture I really cannot say for certain cock or hen.

okay Pearce thanks. I'll wait to see what the others say. I'm gonna try to take better pics tomorrow (making sure there is no flash on any of them and better straight on shots) and maybe that will help.

I am sure Kaz will look here and be 100% accurate. She is the person to talk to with regards to sexing young budgies.

Number one and two are hens. Number three is not a good enough photo to tell.

The way to work out sexes when the cere has black on it, is to mentally remove the black from what you are seeing, with your mind. make out like it isnt there at all and look for the prominent base colour underneath.

Black beaks means melanin and nothing to do with nutrition.
