I have a baby Budgie inside, but he is really cold at night, how do i keep him warm?

He has a shoebox, with an old piece of towel in it, but he shivers all night,

and he is half the size of Lemons babies, and they are 3 days older than him.(he is 1 & 1/2 weeks, they are 1 week)

Kristy -

Do you have a brooder at all? (If you don't know what a brooder is, all it is a reptile tank with a reptile heating pad mounted to the bottom underside of the tank.) That would be my suggestion. Cover the lid 3/4 the way with a cloth and line the bottom of the tank with a small hand towel and paper towels. Put a small dish of water with a lid with holes in the lid in for humidity. I got my set up for less than $40 US dollars. The tank, lid, and heat pad. So it's not that expensive and always good to have around.

If you can't do that maybe a smaller enclosure that can hold in the heat a bit more than a cage would?

Just suggestions. I use a brooder and have it set up all the time for when needed or for when handfeeding cockatiels.

I'm not sure what else to suggest besides a heat lamp, but that isn't a good idea at night (no lights out time). Wait for the others and see what they say. But good luck either way.

Why do you have him inside on his own? Did you have to remove him from his parents? Do you not have a foster nest to put him in? You mention lemons babies... even though he is younger than them, it would still be worth trying him in their nestbox. It is better they are kept with their parents for warmth and food etc... If you have no other options, he needs to be kept in some sort of brooder... He needs more then a towel to keep him warm, he needs help to keep his body at a survivable temperature... He will not survive like he is...

The baby does still have the father, who feeds it quite well, but does not keep the baby warm. I am worried about putting it in with other chicks, because its mother died recently, and the baby might have the same "disease". It might pass this on to the other chicks. The mother died a week ago, so he has lasted for a week, and is starting to grow some down at last, but only just starting. I just want to warm him up somehow, without cutting the father off. Perhaps he can go in with the other chicks, now that he has lasted a week? He is 18 days old.

I would like to put him in with the other chicks, do you think it is safe by now?

Thanks,

Kirsty.

Personally unless you know what the mother died of I would not put him in with other chicks incase he does have something. If the father is still feeding then he should be right. How do you know the father is not keeping him warm at night?

The hen would have been stronger than the chick. So if the chick has what the mother died off, it would probibly be dead itself.

I'd put it with the other chicks.

I agree with Daz,

If the mother passed anything on to the chick it would have perished by now, including the dad.

I think it would be okay to foster.
