How long is a piece of string?

 

You pay top dollar at auction because you are competing with others for the same bird.

 

If you have a good personal relationship with the breeder you have a better chance of benefiting from their generosity.

 

I think it's safe to say Show budgies range from $30 to thousands.

 

And supply and demand do affect the market.

Shannon I have charged between $0 to $25 for my birds but have been paid up to $70 for a bird.

 

I have seen Henry sell birds from $100 to $250 a bird but has recieved $2500 for a bird.

As Renee said it depends on the bird and the person.

I agree. it all depends on the birds. i have birds that range from $0 - $70 , most are around $20

I know of a couple of breeders over here who wont sell birds for less than $1000

 

Go to your club meetings, mingle and make genuine friends and don't be pushy to buy birds. When breeders like you and you have proved you know your stuff, they will feel comfortable enough to let you look at their birds and maybe even buy some culls.

 

You don't want to pay top dollar for birds at this stage any way. You will make mistakes with wrong pairings and health issues etc, so you really need to get lesser stock birds rather than the showy birds and breed the stock birds up until you have your own solid stock that you can add quality birds to add missing features later down the track. Budgie breeding is not something that happens quickly and the top breeders are as good as they are because they have been doing it for years, often decades.

People continually cull birds Shannon. The thing is they may think you only want budget birds. Make it known that you want some better quality birds and talk about the features you are after in birds you want. Then you will be offered some better birds. BUT better birds mean more $$$$$$'s. You will have to be prepared to pay more money for better birds or you will continue to get cr*p birds sold to you at the "bargain" prices.

Remember too that budgie breeders will not sell good birds if they are of the opinion your aviary and breeding room and knowledge isnt up to scratch. Demonstrate you are doing things right and that you have good sound knowledge and then more breeders will be willing to sell to you. Good luck.

Shannon the first thing you need to do is to have a plan.

 

Steps:

 

1. Join a club. (you've done that)

2. Go to the meeting and speak to the breeders.

3. Go to the shows and look at the birds to see what a good birds like.

4. Note at the shows who is winning and winning consistantly.

5. Speak with them and ask to visit their aviary.

6. Have a look at the general condition of not only the birds but also the aviary.

7. Talk to them about their Management, What they feed and water the birds with and any medications or suppliments they use.

8. Be prepaired to walk away if you don't like what your hear.

9. If you like what you hear, explain that you would like to buy one or two compatible pairs to start a line off and let them know how much you expect to pay for a pair.

10. If they are willing to sell you some birds at the price you are prepaired to pay, support them buy returning when you need an outcross.

 

 

Now a couple of things to remember.

 

1. You may need to sell 8 - 10 of your birds to pay for one of theirs. So if you want 2 pairs you may need to sell 32 - 40 birds.

 

2. They may not sell to you if they don't think your motives are the best for the birds. Many top breeders don't sell for the money they do it to assist those that they think are doing the best for the birds and the fancy.

I have seen a top breed sell to a person and then turn around and give to another. It is called supporting the fancy. But I've know breeders that won't sell to people that they don't trust. You may end up with pet type birds when you want top show birds.

 

3. The birds that you are buy will need to "Click" with your existing birds. Many times this doesn't happen.

My lines are Ganzer, Armstrong, Blair & Pool, Holmes & Howard and trying to start a Hollingsworth. David Ganzer has Holme & Howard and Blair & Pool lines so the birds Click. Gary armstrong and Brian Hollingsworth have Tonkin blood in their birds so they should Click.

 

4. The birds you maybe presented with are called stock birds not Show birds. You need to know how to pair them not only now but in the future to get them to work. Many new breeders don't do this correctly and fail. This is where you need the support of your club members to help you start.

Let it be known that you will be pairing up through a certain period and you will need help on pairing. If you are with a good club, you will get assistance to pair your birds.

 

Shannon, use your club. Support your club, Ask for assistance from your fellow members. This is why we join clubs.

They will be your start and your support.

 

Then when you are going good on the bench and winning, then start to look around to other breeders such as Henry George, Bob Smith, Gary Gazzard .... But be prepared to pay for the birds.

 

I know a breeder that paid $600 for a bird that lasted a few hours. Paired him up and the hen killed him. There is no refund on you money when that happens.

Daz do you have your own line of birds? I dont understand how it works. You get birds from specific breeders lines and breed them together, how would you create your own line?

 

If you bred a Gary Armstrong bird with a blair and pool bird, and kept breeding their children on and on for 10 years. Would they still be Gary Armstrong and blair and pool line? Or would they be your line?

This is what I do. I have may own line which has the combinations in the back ground. I gave up when I paired a Ganzer/Blair & Polle to a Hollingworth / Holmes & Howard. instead of a Ganzer / Blair & Poole / Hollingsworth / Holmes & Howard bird. I called this a D. Wells bird.

I agree with Daz's line of thinking. Breeding say an Armstrong bird to an Armstrong bird still makes the chicks Armstrong chicks and not my bloodline. My bloodline will result from my legring on 3 generations or so down the track I would say of my choices in breeding partners. If birds come from a breeder as a Pair to be bred to each other then they are still that breeders bloodline not my own.
