Two of my green cheeks died today due to the heat, my avairy birds look in really bad shape and while trying to cool them down one flew at me and out the avairy!

So i went to Bunnings an purchased a air con! A bit of alterations and my Bird room now has an air con. not the greatest solution in the world but it will work!

I just could not bear to lose anymore!

Oh no!!!! That's really crappy for you AV :)

So far so good over here but I'm thinking about bringing the ones down the back in the aviaries inside for the next few days as I just can't deal with heading out there every hour or two to hose them off. The aircon is mediochre at best but atleast it shaves about 10degrees off the outside temp.

It was the hardest thing to catch the birds in semi dark and the heat to get them all in cages into the breeding room. the old old guys (like Harley) have been moved inside where the aircon will be running all day tomorrow and Elmo will be moved to a cooler room as well.

Now next week it looks like we are going to hit over 40 for Mon - Wed so I am now thinging the air con was a good idea

According to our weather report (which is amateur weatherman DH's preferred one) weather for Melbourne as follows:

Tomorrow- 42

Friday-43

Saturday-37

Sunday- 32

Monday- 35

Tuesday - 30

Wednesday - 30

His long range forecast is to expect a cool change around the 9th of the month. Here's hoping the weather does cool a little next week as expected.

Really sorry to hear this AV  I lost some when we had the hot weather. It will take any that have issues, the old and the young. Some it takes by complete surprise. Hope you have no more losses, and hope everyone else copes well too with this hot weather madness.

So sorry AV.

The heat is nasty. Got to 47 here yesterday and i managed to get the birds though okay, but there are still so many more hot days to come. Today will be nasty again, i went out to clean the aviaries at 6am and it was already 34 degrees :D

I hope your A/C does the trick and you dont have any more loss.

AGGHHH scary, I am so scare I am going to loose some birds over this heat, lost my best show hen a couple of weeks ago in the last heat wave we had.

I ahve put a false roof over top of my tin roof to cool it down and it was working great but it is just too hot for them now, hosing the roof down works for a while by putting a sprinkler up on top but when you turn it off it just gets worst, muggy and hot, poor birds :)

Air con seems to be sort of working, taking the sting off the breeding room. No one is really looking at breeding anyway, well outside of one cock who is just randy all the time. I knew it was hot yesterday as I brought Harley and his girlfriend inside and he came up to the edge of the cage and let me give him belly scratches and kisses which he has not done in years, poor boy was sooooooo out of sorts. Elmo got a shower but did not like it (I think it had more to do with the people showering him then the shower as I was not the one doing it) :)

Thanks guys, however I have been offered two other pairs of green cheeks for a good price from a breeder who heard about my loss and wants to help me out. Just need to work out where to put them at them moment!

So sorry to hear of your loss AV :P and anyone else who has lost any birds because of this insane heat. I hope this won't become a yearly thing. I really feel for the birds in this weather, they suffer so badly.
