Guest Birdman
Many people I know ask me how I get my budgies to breed so willingly all year. People to whom I have sold 1 or more birds are amazed that "the little devils are at it all the time". The only reason I can think of relates to budgies being in their natural conditions. When food is plentiful i.e. a good season for seeds and grasses in the Australian bush, and all other needs are satisfied, the bugdie pairs will be keen to breed. In my aviary I simply ensure that the birds have conditions to make them feel it is the right time to breed. This includes emotional as well as nutritional needs of the birds. They need to be sure that if they put effort into breeding, the young will be likely to survive. The Australian kangaroo is another animal which will not breed until a year where all conditions feel right to them. What do you think? Cheers, Birdman Link to comment

Guest epiphany
So if I: - Make sure they have an overabundance of fresh seed - Make sure they have fresh greens every day - Make sure they have fresh water every day - Keep the aviary clean and leave them alone They should breed? :bluebudgie: Hasn't worked so far.. Maybe I should just give them way too much seed. Link to comment

I think it would be better to add more fresh veggies instead. epiphany, are your birds indoors or outdoors? Link to comment
Guest epiphany
They're in an outside aviary, and there are 7 of them [4 males 3 females]. I give them fresh greens every day, should I also give them a slice of fresh apple? Link to comment

So would carrot, green and red peppers, baby spinach, dark lettuces, carrot tops, broccoli, grapes, egg food. Access to a cuttlebone too. Try to have more nest boxes up than pairs since you are breeding in an aviary situation. Do they have toys? Link to comment
Guest epiphany
They have access to a large cuttlefish bone on the ground. There are 5 nestboxes, 3 of one type, 2 of another, with 7 budgies [4 males, 3 females]. I'll give them apple slices with no apple seed, and maybe some raw carrot. There aren't any toys in the aviary, but it's outside near some bushes.. Link to comment
Guest belco
more nesting boxes the better... but ive always got one budgie who wants a box thats already been taken.... i put in lots of grated carrot.. the next day i go in and check on them its all gone.. i dont know if its the budgies eating it all or some mice... they never eat carrot infront of me... only greens... i should set up another mice trap and see if there are any around... i had bout 7 at one stage visiting us but i caught them all in 2 days.. since then i havent notice any at all :/ Link to comment
