I had been reccomneded to go to the Vet at Chermside by another vet because she couldn't tell me what was wrong with Blueberry. After checking the crop, euthenizing Blueberry, cremating him, and checking the crop on Lemon and also her poo, and then handed a bag of pellets my bill came upto over $300. Now I think that is a bit too expensive for tiny birds.

Is there any places that are Northside Brisbane that won't cost me an arm and a leg everytime I go?

I posted a topic re my visit to this same vet around October when on booking over the phone, I had been quoted $16 to have Charley's wings clipped. In a nutshell...they asked would I like a health check for him as well .. i said 'sure" (that would be nice). On my way out I was given the bill (from memory) $185. Although in hindsight I was wrong not to ask how much extra a "health check" would cost, I feel I should have been given SOME warning of the cost! I will think twice about going back there.

I actually have nothing but praise for the vets at that centre. I had reason to see them 3 times in a month at the end of last year, although it was with chickens and not our budgie.

Everyone we dealt with was wonderful. With regards to the costs, I guess $300 certainly is a lot of money for small birds but really the size of the pet shouldn't change the fact that these are specialists in their field. It may seem to us that they didn't do much to earn that money but we are paying also for their knowledge and experience.

I have no hesitation in taking our budgie there. :P

Granted, they do provide good care and were wonderful with Charley. However I do think they should advise when something is going to cost more than the quoted amount. e.g. "wing clipping is $6.50 .. and would you like a health check?? it will be $80 extra for a thorough check..."..

I would possibly still have opted for the health check but would have been prepared with the payment instead of the rude shock I got when I had counted on approx $50 and was fronted with $183!

I went to Chermside as well a few weeks ago to ask for ivermectin, and was told they don't stock it because it's toxic. And was also told a health check, which they recommend for all new budgies, is $115.

Fair enough that they're experts etc, but why do they need to charge that much when other bird vets only charge $50, or less?

Sounds like a rip off to me. So if anyone knows any other reasonably priced and good bird vets on the northside of Brisbane, I'd be interested too. Be good to know for when it's needed, bit late to start asking around if there's an emergency.

:D I cannot speak highly enough of the Staff at the Chermside clinic. They saved my precious cockatiel's life and have given tremendous help with my budgies and other cockatiels. Yes, they are expensive - but so are all vets. You get what you pay for. It goes for all pets - if you cannot afford the vet fees, you cannot afford a pet.

I'd rather go to Wishart or Mt Gravat. Even though I live at Warner.

When that vet was at Brighton (the one that's now at Chermside), my mum used to ring up and get advice over the phone for our budgies! That was obviously free.... so, I am happy (sort of) to pay a big bill in future if I ever need an avian vet. Now that I live near there, they are the nearest avian vet to me so I have their number on the fridge. I really don't know of any others on the north side. Sorry that was no help at all. Sucks to hear that they're really expensive though, but I'm not surprised...

Following the very expensive visit to the Chermside vet (albeit good quality service but still definitely highly over priced!!) I took Charley to the vet in Brighton and was very happy with their service AND their cost. They did a wing trim for $16 as advertised. I would not have had such a problem with Chermside if they had warned me that their $15.50 wing trim plus a "health check" was going to surprise me with a $185 bill at the end. I agree if you cant afford vet fees, you can't afford pets.. but heck.. there's surely something a little unprofessional about ripping people off! They could advise you at the time that a health check is going to cost you approx $150 more!

As said, I'd drive past them to go to the south side.. My last bill was $700 and was worth every cent. They have even refered patients to me.

:D I agree with thk, a vet at the Brighton clinic is very good with birds. She used to work at the Chermside clinic. Ask to see her. I go there for little things because it is closer to where I live. For the main stuff, I go to Chermside. Once you build up a relationship there you receive much more than you are billed for.

Hi there I am very interested in this topic as I am from Tassie and had a great vet for all my babies but have just booked Zeke into the vet at Bracken Ridge to have his wings clipped and beak checked as I feel its to long. I have never ever in my whole life had a budgies wings clipped as living in Tassie all our homes were small and on one level but the house we rent here is huge and on two levels with lots of fans going all the time. (we still are not used to the heat after two years). Zeke is going well in his training but am worried that when I let him out for the first time he may just fly into a fan or open door etc. I am feeling sooooooooooo stressed about it. Does it hurt him???? :D:)

No, zeke's mum, a wing trim does not hurt - provided the feathers which are cut are not blood feathers. If the vet knows anything, he'll know to check for that. If you do get a bleed from a wing trim - never go back. I suggest you only go to a vet whom another bird owner has recommended

Do not have fans going when your bird is out of the cage. an accident is inevitable if you do. Even a wing trim will leave your bird with some elevation. If there is no degree of elevation, the trimmer has practically crippled your bird. All my birds are very frightened of fans and go into a majorly dangerous panic. They also flip when they see big birds in flight on the TV. The fans must be like big birds to them. :D

I'm happy to read this as I wondered whether my vet had indeed trimmed enough of Charley's wings as he is still able to "elevate" a little, from floor to upper perch and in fact a few feet up into the air. I thought perhaps they hadnt trimmed enough as was expecting him to be able to do no more than just flutter (like a "runner" does). So I'm glad that this seems to be quite normal!

You never want to clip the wings so as to stop flight. Budgerigars need to be able to fly if they fall. Falling from 4 feet is like falling from a 2 story building for us.

They should be able with a lot of effort to fly short distances.

Yes, Daz, I have cockatiel suffering lifelong consequences of a bad wing trim. His hard landings split his vent to the bone. His tail is now immobile and he cannot clean it. Fortunately, he now has a doting mate who does it for him.

When you first get a wing trim, just a few of the primary flight feathers should be trimmed and then the bird should take a test flight . Another feather can be trimmed if need be. Some birds need more feathers trimmed than others do.

Hi

There is a vet at Wilston Vet on Brisbane's North ph 3357 3882 and her name is Amisha and she has a special interest in birds.....but she is just a normal vet, not a specialist..so if you just want regular check-ups, wing clips and general stuff, then its cheaper there. if you have a really sick bird though, then a specialist bird vet is really what you need even though they charge a lot more.....its worth it for their expertise.
