There have been a lot of questions recently on how to freight budgies.

Budgies travel really well via airplane and its a great way to get quality birds from breeders who live in other states.

WHO

Australia Air Express

Phone 13 12 13

Website: Australia Air Express

HOW MUCH

Most of the time accompanied pets (up to 10kg) costs $50 flat rate.

Some states allow accompanied pet transport for free as part of luggage Unaccompanied birds cost around $80

WHAT

You need a carry case which is like this one - must have 3 enclosed sides and a wire front. A secure and lockable door.

Must have lots of ventilation holes near the top of the closed in sides, especially when there are lots of birds.

This pictured case is 45cm wide, 30cm deep by 16cm high

P1000849.jpg

Also this box with birds in it only weighed 2.4kg

HOW MANY

How many can you fit in that little box???

quite a lot actually. Up to 25 birds will fit in the pictured case quite safely. The more there are, the better they travel as they keep each other safe by huddling together.

P1010033.jpg

FOOD AND WATER

Most of the time, food and water is not permitted. Just make sure you have food and water to give the birds when they arrive as they will be hungry.

I cant think of anything else right now, but feel free to add any of your budgie travel experiences or tips too.

Added to Livs great advice and article.............

NO PERCHES. Its easier for a bird to remain flatfooted to the floor huddling with others than it is for them to try and perch and fail at it. To try and perch and fall off onto other birds means squabbles amongst the birds. Better all on the floor and cosying up to each other.

Dave will be here in Perth in a weeks time to visit with me. He is hoping to bring birds back home with him. I have some for Dave and will also organise possible birds from other breeders so Dave can take some birds home with him.

Kaz would you be able to organise some for me. How much do you ask for your birds?

Have you taken any pics of the birds you have for sale?

Pms are for messages like this one, not posting transactions in another persons topic.

BUT I will answer you. :P

I dont have any birds for sale. I have a few cocks that I am saving for Dave. I need hens myself. I am trying to organise some birds for Dave while he is here but from other breeders. Hoping there will be some. Maybe you should contact Dave and give him a list, and if he sees some and he doesnt want the same ones, he can shop for you. Upfront money of course with no hassles for Dave or his holiday wont feel like a holiday

If I had birds for sale I would have advertised them here.

Liv or Dave.

When flying with your birds did you drop them off at the AAE terminal or take them into check-in with your luggage? As I noticed the small to medium pet carriers can be checked in with your luggage. Is it the same for bird boxes?

Cheers guys

Nyree

Birds get checked in an hour before flight to the AAE depot and not with luggage

Some airports allow the birds to go in with the luggage check in.... perth is not one of them though.

The ones who allow the pets with the luggage check in also means that the freight is no extra cost as its a part of your baggage charge

My entire charge was $50. When they told me it woudl cost $50 I said "Is that all?" They joked that they could charge me more if I wanted. I told them I was satisifed that $50 was more than adequate. When you consider the number of birds, $50 was under $2 a bird.

JB the airports which allow your bird to fly as part of your checked luggage are all the major east coast ones, Melbourne, Sydney and Brissy. If you are travelling to or from an airport elsewhere they need to be sent seperately even if one end of your destination is east coast. So if I flew with birds from Perth it would cost $50ish, but if I flew with birds from Sydney it would cost me nothing as long as that weight was factored into my luggage

Hi!

Just a couple questions

1. Does anyone know if Brisbane costs? Like when you said it costs $50 but some airports allow you to check in your birds as luggage, for free (unless you pack heavy and need to pay extra :o like me )

2. What airlines allow you to use pet travel?

Ta!

Squeak.

You will have to phone the airlines and ask them, and also australia air express etc. phone details at beginning of this topic. Price varies depending on if birds are sent alone or accompanied.
