How Old Do Babies Need To Be, To Leave Nest?

Recommended Posts

I need some advice at what age do you remove the young from the nest? The mother is spending more time in the nest box, which I can only presume that she maybe getting ready to lay her second clutch of eggs. The male seems to be feeding the young more then her and the young are hanging around the nest box entry. The babies are 1 month old and have been eating millet sprig when I place it in the nest box.

thanks Geoff

Are they in a breeding box or are they in a flght with other birds? They still need atleast their father at that age but you can take them out of the nestbox and put them in a little icecream tub on the bottom of the cage so dad can't still feed them but the nestbox is empty for mum to start her second clutch.

Perfect ^_^ Do as I said above and they should be fine, if it gets cold at night cut a little door inthe icecream tub and turn it over at bed time so they can stay warm underneath it and then flip it up and sit them in it again during the day

Most of my babies fledge at 4 weeks so you wont need to worry to much. An icecream tub fits through the average door when squeezed together on an angle ^_^

My babies leave around 4 weeks of age. By that time they are usually fully feathered and can eat seed on their own.

My reply is you don't. I purposely built my nest boxes deeper to keep the chicks in... :star: The chicks will come out when they are ready. Any time after 28 days.

I have little ones about to leave their nesting box.  today I watched them with half closed eyes as I was sure one would crash to the ground but the mother ushered them back in.

its so interesting, what a visual story it is to watch the birds interact with each other and their mates.  I think we learn more from this then any reading.  having said that I am interested to see how the colors come through with these birds and look forward to having a few new healthy birds join the other before the cooler weather comes.

I shall look forward to learning more and reading your posts.

thankyou
