Removed shop name... best not to name a store in a situation like this. If you wish to PM a local member, you can mention the store name in a PM but NOT in the forum

Without a photo I can't tell what it is? Maybe just ask them what is wrong with their faces and see what they say??? You can only try by mentioning it.

With situations like this... we don't have a lot of options... Some people buy the birds out of pity, but they soon just get more and probably treat them the same way. Some people report them, but this doesn't always prove to be successful. OR you say something to them in the hope they will listen and do something about it...

It's just not a good idea to name shops when we are complaining about them... Can cause problems for this site and individuals.

You're not being too dramatic... you just care. :laughter:

Yeah, I realize that. I just don't want you or others to get in trouble. But feel free to PM local members who you think may be able to help you with this... :laughter: You can keep this post going but just no names... Names in PM's are fine!

Hi Elise, I am not sure which outlet of that particular chain it is but I have reported another one of their stores in the past for having about 15 kittens in a tiny cage(some of which were maybe 4 weeks old) and they got into a lot of trouble. You need to contact the local council and they will send someone out to inspect. In Melbourne it isn't RSPCA who inspects pet shops it's the council ranger :laughter: If you find out what that council area is, call them and ask to speak to the animal ranger. Then say to them that you have seen budgies with really bad scaley face being sold and that you have also seen dead birds in the shop in the past they will send someone to look B)

I got a budgie that from some one that was not nice to it, tried to stop it from eating, had it in a tiny cage and was extremily scared of it. I got it when her company died and she had the whole nose bit was all swallen up and after a while after i had her and had tamed her up the nose just went down and her whole colour brightend up so we think it was just stress from how she was treated.

Well you know what you have to do, don't you?

You need to buy them and bring them back to good health. Simple really, I can't understand why you're making such a fuss.

Buying them may not be the anwser if you don't have adequate resources, yes it would be nice if we could all solve problems that easily but it's not always possible, but it's nice to know that you are concerned and I hope you have some success with the council, because obviously the shop needs to be aware of how to properly care for budgies and quarantine and treat sick budgies :D before putting them up for sale.

Aha!

Well an old adage springs to mind-

Give me the courage to change the things I can

The humility to accept the things I cannot

And the wisdom to acknowledge the difference

If you ever see scalyface like that in petshop budgies, just draw it to their attention. Scalyface is not life or death, ....its treatable. BUT they should not have them in the for sale cage.

Here's hoping the shop assistant's hadn't noticed that the budgie's were suffering from scaly face and have since discovered the problem and have removed the birds for treatment  . If this is the case maybe there're not as negligent as what was thought.

In fact scale face and mites in budgies are as life threatening as athlete's foot and nits in humans.

Also, you shouldn't buy from a petshop or any vendor who are selling sick birds as it will only mean that they have profited from doing so and will continue to stock unhealthy birds or not treat them.

I agree....buying or "rescuing" sick or disabled birds at full price in a petshop just enables these shops to take anything a breeder sells them and not care. Pretty soon petshops have worked out most sales are from impulse and credit card buys and also from pity purchases.

Good point. In fact what I do when confronted by a distressing situation is inform the vendor that his/her sick and untreated birds have totally put me off his/her store and that I will not buy from them in future. And I mean it.

lilbabybudgie, you may know by now that I cannot abide pointless whinging - so don't take my posts personally.

Its always tough when we see the sick ones in the shops - sadly with all the dishonest people out there, there will always be sick birds on the market :)

I have experienced a number of shops who have frequent sick birds - one place sells only FM birds. I am a fairly quiet person who doesn't like to cause a stir but shops like this leave me complaining to the manager or calling the rspca.

Remember with these sick birds there can often be more serious underlying issues and could introduce unwanted diseases into you existing birds. As hard as it can be, its best to leave them alone and get the professionals to handle it.
