I Just Got A New Bird...

Recommended Posts

I just bought a new bird last week, and I am confused. He acts very strangely, it's kind of hard to describe, but I'll do my best.

The first day I got him, he acted pretty normally. Nervous and scared, which I thought was completely natural.

On the next day, I started interacting with him in small segments of the day, and he actually jumped onto my finger. Now, the guy who sold the bird to me at the pet store told me that he seemed used to human touch, so this might happen. Well, now he jumps onto my finger every so often but usually freaks out when I change his food or water. Today he flew out, right towards my mirror. He had no trouble getting back onto my finger, and he seems to already know step-up, which was very confusing for me.

A few of the guides I read say that they should take a while to learn this stuff, but my bird seemed to know it already.

So, my question is, what should I do? Where should I start with the taming, if he already seems to know step-up but is still scared to death of my hand?

I know he's scared to death because he freaks out when I do anything with the cage.

Also, he chirps sometimes but only at night, other than that he's completely silent. I'm worried!

My old bird used to be silent for a long time. Then he became the best talker. If he has been brought up on his own as a single bird he may not have learnt much "budgie talk".

As far as him being tame, I wouldn't stress. Rejoice that he is already tame. If you spend lots of time with him where he feels comfortable then he will soon learn to trust you when you go to move things in the cage. If you can let him choose to be with you (instead of force) this will make the bond even stronger.

Good luck and keep us informed

PS. DOnt be too worried about his actions (in terms of tameness) be more concerned with is actions in terms of health (fluffing up, wheezing etc etc). Every budgie has their own wonderful personality

I would start by putting something he loes in your hand likemillet so that he starts looking what you might have for himrather than freaking out

Okay, I'll try these things.

It's like he learned the things in chapter 2 before he learned chapter 1.

I hope he can be tamed.

I'll keep you guys updated :P

When you got him did the person catch him with their hand? Youmay find that his behaviour is because of this

he's probably not used to you yet, its only been a week. Give him time and he should be fine :) Good luck.

Every bird if different. I have birds that could not care less if I stuck my hand in the cage and others I walk past and they throw themselves around the cage like I am trying to kill them. Take it slow and if anything freaks him out stop doing it let him settle and then start again. Good luckkeep us updated.
