I just looked at the leg band of my cock that fathered my only surviving chick. The band is gold which I though was 2006, but it looks like is says 00 which would be 2000, that means he's 8 years old??? He's to old to be breeding then isn't he? Is it possible over here in the US that they just used a gold band for 06 even though it says 00? I got him at the pet store. Does he look 8 years old to everyone?

This is what he looked like when I first bought him...

And this is his leg band...

And this is what he looks like now... (almost a year later)...

Some advice is you have it?

if the 00 is after the letters it isnt about the year...its his number. Please read all the legband info and let us know. Its different from the states to australia though. BUT after letters is a number that is NOT the year.

This is what his leg band says? AAA 00 92 So that doesn't mean 2000?? Why would they band their legs if it doesn't tell you how old they are? Now I'm wondering if ANY of my bands are right??Of all my birds I only have 5 with bands these are their band #'s... all but one have the numbers after letters?? AAA 07 E43358 - black, AAA 08 E18981 - black, AAA 08 8229 - blue, 07 TF - purple

That's not good Liv... I bred him! He's the father of my chick I've been showing off! Edited by chrissy0705

This doesn't make sense then... I have purple and blues and they aren't even on this chart??? and if the part c. is the year of birth, they are saying he's born in 92???? I'm lost?

I'll post pics in a second of these other bands.

The breeder of him may not have been using breeders rings...he may have just put any old rings on to id a family line of chicks.

Then the 07 and 08 I've seen have nothing to do with their age... so I have no idea how old any of my birds are besides my 24 day old baby... that's just great?

Why do you think the 07 and 08 have nothing to do with their age ? As those numbers go across the legband it is their year of hatching.

A friend of mine and I went around and around in circles trying to find out how old one of her's was (she is also in the states) finally gave up and rang the breeder and he had just put legg bands on to identify different chicks and does not apy attention to colour and or year which is annoying but may also be the case with you.

07 is probably the only one that makes sense from what you said about the numbers after the letters... all the bands start with letters first and you said if the numbers are after the letters (the b. section) that is the breeder ID not the year of birth. Do I have this wrong ? Am I misunderstanding you?

I thought the gold was 00 or 06.... ???? I can't pull him out now, he's helping feed the chick? And they've been mating again for the next go round, what should I do now??

In future be very very sure of their age before putting down to breed.

That's the thing, I thought I was sure.... :D Will he be okay? I know the worry is stronger with hens because of egg binding and all that, but will he be okay? He's been great with feeding. Half the time anymore the mum is out on a perch preening and playing and HE is the one feeding the chick. He's been a great dad.

Chrissy, personally if he looks okay and then I would just let him go for the time being and know that you have learn a lesson and been lucky. If you can stop them before the next round that might be a good idea as this will give him a good rest up.

I have two birds that look pretty much the same, caught one, looked at the leg ring and went"yes that's her" her put down and then realised that I had just looked at the colour of the leg ring not what was written on it and put a hen that was FAR FAR to young to go down. The reason is that the breeder had put a split ring on her which is the same colour as the other hens leg ring, I got so confused but I learnt from my mistake and you grow as a breeder.

If you look at the photo of him when you brought him home from the shops you can see the lines that go across his head and down his back when they are babies they have them all the way to the front so when you brought him he would have been around 6 weeks old. How long have you had him for? He will be fine to leave him to carry on looking after the baby for now. If they begin to lay before he finishes feeding the older baby then you can consider fostering the eggs out to another couple and give him a break. If you dont have any other pair to foster too you can let him raise them it will not harm him as long as you give him vitamins and all the right foods he should be fine. I have had young males raise babies (9 months+) and they have been great dads so make up your own mind whether you think he is coping with it.

The chick is 25 days old now and there is only one. He seems to do most of the feeding anyway, do you think I should remove the hen and just let dad finish so I'm able to seperate them? As long as they are both in there I can't stop them from breeding and the hen has already thrown out all the nesting material from the nest box that the chick is in. Is it bad to remove the hen instead at this stage of the chicks life?

Its a very good idea you have to remove the hen at this stage :P Rest her in a cage somewhere where she can build herself back up on good food and vitamins. As soon as possible before she begins egglaying again.

Should she be alone or can I put her in with my other non mating females right now? What do you suggest. And how long of a "rest" do you recomend for her? And as for the male, he is the young one, but as long as he's not having to feed his mate and the chick he should do well, right?

I also wanted to bring up one more point. It has been stated that this cock was maybe 6 weeks old when I got him and the gold band indicated he was born in 08. I kept thinking of when I bought him so I checked my purchase reciept and I bought him from the pet store on 12-30-07.... ??? So now I'm confused again as to how old he really is? If I bught him in 07 there's no way this band is gold for 08??? Any comments?

The legrings would be issued prior to the beginning of 2008 which would account for your bird being rung just prior to the new year.

Best the hen is alone and resting if you can manage it on her own. As she needs rest and put in with others is a stress right now. Just a couple of weeks would be enough.

And the cock finishing off the raising of just one chick will be fine. :P
