Jwancia's New Small Flock.

I was going to say they were both opaline... maybe the blue bird is normal though... I'm hopeless with opaline I still haven't figured out what it is that is different, I just know it looks different...

So many beautiful budgies! I had missed this thread at first and wondered why you had talked about breeding so much if you only had the one bush pair. You need to update your thing below your name that says "Budgies kept: 3" :)

Do you have doors on the breeder cage that is lockable or can a budgie lift it up ? Are they in a secure area ?

just the new two in the breeding cabinet. Its not locked. but the bushies were in it and never got out.

Fair enough if one lifteded it. but both is ver unlikely

doors closed when i got home. its on our verandah (through the carport, through a gate, into the back)

You know I have a birdroom with all my breeder cages in, right ? Just about everytime I open the breeder room door there is a couple of budgie out and flying the room. Most often due to one of them lifting up the door and flying out. They show their partner how to at the same time...most often both are out. They also lift the nesting box lid to get out too. Most escapees are out in "pairs" so YES its entirely possible thats what happened to yours. I am sorry :(

If yours arent in a secure area then all doors must be pegged, extra doors cable tied, and nesting box lids secured.

Oh no... so sorry for your loss. With this and the loss of your bush budgie dad... maybe you should invest in a secure area for them... another aviary for breeding cages and/quarantine cages to go in... that way nothing can/will escape. Hugs :(

I can only imagine... you can get those padlocks (large and small) that use a combination instead of a key. I have them on my aviary. It's eaiser than remembering the key all the time. I also use cable ties for the doors I don't need to use and pegs on the others...

Worst escaped bird I ever had was ...

once a had a blind budgie, and as soon as I realised it had gone blind I put it in a cage hanging on the back patio till I could think of a home for her. Unfortunately she was trying to escape the cage and eventually found a gap I hadnt noticed and flew off. I always wonder about her...blind and flying ...where ? ? I am sure she was a hawks dinner before too long. Wish I had noticed the gap sooner and anticipated that she would try and escape :(

Have you looked around the neighbourhood or is it too late and too dark ?

Its a flip up top lid. Its a nest box that came attatched to the cabinet (all wooden) that can be removedYou really think they got themselves out? Its never happened before? And why dont the aviary birds do it?Too late and too dark. No one was at home all day so who knows when it could have been

You know how pairs newly put into breeder sized cages try to jailbreak....they are more lekely to try and escape than other birds. flip up lid should have had something weighty on top.

YES I really believe they let themselves out. You need to go through everything thats not secured and think like a budgie who wants out.

Everytime I open the breeding room door there is budgies out. Difference is its a secure area.
