Put them in now. Most hens will throw most if not all out. You just keep replacing it. Once the eggs hatch, they usually don't worry about getting rid of it, but you'll have to replace it often as the chicks will poo LOTS!!!!

Others may be different, but I had a handful at the start this then lets me know if they have been going in and out of the next box as normally all my hens remove it. Once the Chicks are hatched I put some in to help keep the nest box cleaner depending on the hen.

Budgies dont "build" nests so putting nesting materials in the cage for them to choose to use doesnt work with budgies.

There are a few different types of materials you can use for nesting - As Kaz has mention they don't BUILD nest like others

Most common used materials are Wood shaving - Nesting moss and I am sure that Liv has suggested a while back Lucine Chaff as well

good luck with the breeding

Natural kitty litter can be used in nesting boxes also.

Cynthz............you are totally ignoring the fact that we have advised this hen is too young to breed with. You said you would remove the nestbox and yopu havent and now you are deciding to breed anyway and shop for nesting materials

look i have removed the nesting box thanks for the information. my problem is that when i purchased her i was told she was an adult and a year old now i'm not to certain about her true age as i'm not sure how trustworthy this guy was. but i don't want to end up in the same situation as my other pair where i'm not being told she's to old to breed if you know what i mean. but thanks for all the information

The best thing you can do is if someone tell you a hen is of breeding age and you don't know is to take the date you get them and wait the full 1 year or if you can tell them are at least 6 months (a 2nd molt and the bar lines are gone from the cere to the middle part of the head) then wait 8 months that will give you a year. ;)
