Hi everyone.

My family have just bought our first budgie. He/She is white and is weird.

We have a bigger then normal cage for him/her.

All he/she wants to do is:

Tries to twist inside out'

Tries to escape,

Paces the floor of the cage,

Bury it's head in the seed,

Gets into the seed box and can't get out.

I was told from Pet shop that it's 6 weeks old.I can pick it up without to much fuss and it will sit on my finger as well if i keep rubbing it's belly.

My wife and kids are concerned thinking that it's going to hurt itself or has a mental issue.

If anyone can help it'll be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks

Craig

Hi and welcome Craig B, new bird and family  Your budgie is 100% normal. Most budgies behave this way... even if the cage is huge. S/he is just figuring out it's cage and testing the boundaries. If you could post a photo of its cage and s/he that would be awsome. We could help you with cage setup and age/sex of your bird. Most pet shops get it wrong. If you're worried about him/her getting stuck in the seed dish, maybe supply it on a flat dish until it calms down a little.

It might take a few days, bit it will calm down, it won't hurt itself (not likely) and it doesn't have a mental issue. :)

More than likely it was breed in an aviary situation, then put into the cage at the pet shop and then into yours... It may help to cover three sides of the cage and only have the front section open. This should help to calm your new friend down!

I'm no expert, and I guess when I know I'm no expert, the first thing I do is defer to the experts. So while I'm sure you might get some ideas from people here .... this darling budgie is your bird, and if you have serious concerns about mental issues, the best person to diagnose that would be a vet. There is a starting list here.

Many hugs and cuddles to your special little bird!

Hello and welcome

This is a picture of one of my budgies trying to escaper her quarantine cage :)

lady3.jpg

The behavior you describe is quite normal for a budgie that is from an aviary.

But it is not so normal for a budgie of only 6 weeks old and makes me feel your budgie is older.

Can you post a picture?

Hi and welcome to you and your family  I don't think you have much to worry about, I agree with maesie it is normal and he should settle down soon, I have a bird that is doing the same thing at the moment, try not to take him out while he is doing this though, talk to him and offer him some millet only when he is behaving. I agree with the others try covering three sided of the cage just leaving the front open, do you have plenty of toys and things to amuse him? we would love some pics and they may help us help you some more, good luck :)

It is the funniest thing to see Birds do the Budgie twist when they are transfered from the Environment.

Maes it spot on with everything. It is a normal behaviour for a bird to try and find an escape route in a new cage ...

No mental issues there .. Yet lol ... But perfectly normal ... 6 weeks? I am going to say 5 weeks Cause young babies burry them self in their seed dishes - If you could take a photo ( in my signature there is a link you can click to show you how ) We will be able to help with the Mutation and the sexing ( boy or girl )

Are it's wings clipped? It it great that you are able to handle it already ( leads me to belove that it is 1 still young 2. was handle from nest )

best of luck and Fun with your new Feathered friend

I have one that did that the first day I got him and now over a year later does it in the breeding cage and the avairy he also sleeps hanging upside down! Normal in 9 out of 10 cases. Agee with the using flat dishes till he/she settles.

I hope you can post a picture.

Have you tried to put a sheet around 3 sides of her cage does this calm her down? If so I would do that for a week keep it covered to make her feel safe.

No it's white with black eyes. The seed dish is on the outside of the cage with axcess thru the inside. There is a flap on the outside to top up water and food.THIS is one of the escape hatches. We have named Houdini

You have a baby hen.

Looks like a Double Factor Spangle or a Dark eyed clear, as i dont see red eyes. :D

She is young so thats good, but she looks older than 6 weeks - more 8-10 weeks which would explain her behavior as she would have had time to get used to the space of an aviary

She is lovely :D

hello :D My budgie was pet store bought at 6 weeks and he tried to do the twist escape thing for a couple of weeks when I got him home, even though he came from quite a small cage in the pet store. He also would wiggle under his seed bowl and all sorts of weird things. This phase didn't last long though. Whether it is more of a pet store trait I don't know :D

Sorry about that

Your budgie is a female (hen) :D

The type of budgie you have is either a Double factor spangle or a Dark eyed clear

Either way you have a white budgie who is not an albino :P

:P

She is fine :D

It would be the cage that is causing most of the problems.

No mutants - No Mental illness - just a wrong cage.

Pet shops are to blame for these bad cages  They should know better!!

Yes we have done that and she STILL goes berko and paces the floor of the cage.

I don't know if it's normal but when she runs across the floor sideways, she sticks left wing in the air to go sideways to the right, and right wing in the air to go sideways to the left.
