1.Long masks

2.directional feather......where the feathers from the cere go outwards and upwards in a kind of buffalo horn shape covering the eyes so you cannot see the eyes from the front of the bird

3. Backscull....Looking side on profile...the eyes have to be forward towards the front of the birds head pne third and two thirds of the head at the back.

4. Blow.......lots of feather up on top and a disire to throw it forward when relaxed

5. When blowing feathers forward...from the front of the bird...it needs to look fully round above the cere.

There's more but thats a start :P

For those of us who don't know, don't show, or are just curious, it would be really cool if any of you could post photos which show budgies with particularly nice examples of the features you have mentioned. I am really curious now!

Yay! My curiosity is starting to get the better of me... am itching to see pics now! It's like when you're told at lunch time that you'll be having [insert favourite dinner meal here] for dinner... once the idea of it is in your head, it never seems to happen fast enough!

This boy, I am showing due to his long mask and circular shape to the top of his head http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r145/ka...ies/GDA5693.jpg

This one shows how the feathers go across the cere and dip downwards at the sides before sweeping up and over the eye ...that is directional feather

DSCF1687.jpg

she also has a reasonably long mask and if you check out the location of her eye in relationship to the back of her head...you will see her eye is about one third of the way from the front of her head to the back. Two thirds from eye to back of head showing what is called BACKSKULL

This hen shows good round, circular formation of feathers above the cere and reasinable length of mask

DSCF1746.jpg

Here you see, some directional feather as described in photo two, also good eye position and reasonable mask length DSCF1793.jpg

DSCF1791.jpg

This boy has good round shape to feathers above the cere, good long mask

DSCF1803.jpg

and same with this hen

DSCF1823.jpg

more to follow.....but I have to go to the hardware store

Head, or what is called TOP END is pretty important. Also is length of body, stature on the perch, and meeting the standard for each variety.

I agree with all that Kaz has said she has pointed out most of the important things. But as others have said don’t forget that these birds have bodies & other parts, sometimes when you hear show breeders talking you would think that all a Budgie has is a head. That’s why I think sometimes some show birds have faults that it would be better they were without, but I think it’s because some get carried away with only what their heads look like…Good post Neat, we all could learn a lot from this. I'm only learning too.

One thing to remember..........when you concentrate too hard on making the top end larger and heavier....................

you gotta glue their little footsies to the perch or they swivel forward and bonk their wittle beaks :wub:B)

At least some you bought don’t look too bad, so should be some good ones on deck soon if not already.

Some of my latest chicks are looking bigger & less of them in number [per batch] that's a sign I'm breeding show types don't you think???

You will need to buy the right birds,& thats harder said then done. You will need to crawl before you walk.It will happen but it will not happen over night.I will say you will get there ,quicker if you stick with breeding normals & you will

need to have some greens,Pritty budgies will not win shows.

and Pretty budgies usually fall between the cracks in categories or the STANDARD. Mixed types are harder to classify and show and lose points due to that IF you can find a way to show them B)
