As the topic says, I am new. I have a new baby Budgie and I'm not quite sure what to call him yet. I have been reading up on different tips and tricks for training budgies.

My question is, how do you go about making him tame? I brought him home yesterday and he is still really jittery. Everytime I walk past his cage I say hello to him in a low tone. He does seem a little happier now, he's trilling a lot more than yesterday and he was having a good old conversation with himself lastnight aswell :D.

I saw that you shouldn't put mirrors in the cage with a lone budgie so I am going to attempt to take it out soon.

Any extra help will be appreciated :)

Here is a picture of him.

Welcome Vixen you are a nice looking budgie. he is a yellowface type 2.

Does he always stand like that or was he moving when you too the picture?

He isn't a super young bird as he has already had this first moult and lost the bars on his head (3 months and older) you can still tame him. talking to him as you walk past is great. feel free to read up on the taming topics here on the site.

and welcome again.

Thanks for the response. I just put my hand in there for a bit just now I was looking at "him" now I'm not so sure if it's a him or her lol.

And yeah, S/he always stands like that. I didn't notice it before. Hmmm, a bit worried now.

Andrew, this is my first Budgie so I'm not quite sure what I'm doing wrong or right yet...

Hello and welcome :budgiedance:

He is a very sweet looking boy. He looks like he has rickets (calcium deficiency as a chick) making his legs and feet weaker. My Scooter has rickets too and he is just adorable

As Nerwin said, he is older than 3 months, I'd say he's about 6 months old. Is he flighty or quiet. You will be able to tame him but it will take a lot longer than if he was a baby. :)

nothing you can do to correct his feet now, sound to me you are doing great if he wasn't panicked with your hand in the cage.

getting a wooden banch would give more grip and better for him than the plastic one that come with the cage. I natural one from a safe tree would be great. (gum works well)

Well, he is starting to be a lot more noisier than he was yesterday. My other half Clinton has a Green, yellow olive Lorikeet named Olive and she's adorable. The Budgie seems to respond to her a lot too. Will see how we go with it. I really hope it will be okay, the last thing I want is to scare it to death.

Thanks for all the replies :budgiedance:

Awe thanks for the lovely reply :budgiedance:

I just put my hand in there again and he didn't really flinch. He was looking at my hand a lot too. I slowly brought it a little closer to him and he didn't fly away....

He trilling again just now and I found him eating his seed. Something I was wondering if he was doing or not. I'm so happy! I'm tossing up names for him now, Jingles, Petey, Paulie, Charlie or I might just stay with Pretty boy coz he is

I was actually thinking the same thing lol.

Here is a better picture:

100_0894.jpg

My hand is the closest it's ever been to her/him too :budgiedance:.

Is it hard to teach budgies to talk too? My other half Clinton, wants to teach it lol. He reckons that Male Budgies talk better than Females.

Hi Vixen and birdie!!! Welcome to the forum. I'm thinking your bird might be female too. Look at the Cere (the bit above the beak) what colour is it? Brown or Blue... and are their white rings around the nostrils? Regardless of sex, s/he's a sweetie and you are already do a great job to be able to put your hand in the cage. Thanks, maesie xx

It is an Opaline Green Bird and I can't really tell he or she a brighter picture would be great ;). I wrote up an article called Taming Your Budgies in the FAQ section, it is lengthy but has wonderful tips and tools you can use. http://forums.budgiebreeders.asn.au/faqs/i...&artlang=en

As Nerwen said your bird has probably had 1 molt already so is probably around the 6-8 month mark which is most likely why he is very skittish and hasn't had any human hand contact especially if you bought him from a pet store or a large aviary where they don't have a lot of hand to hand contact. That is okay, but I will tell you PATIENCE is going to be the KEY.

All birds tame at different rates, it took Pretty who was around 3 months and a pet shop budgie to really get to trust me around 9 months, I know that seems a long time but when you add the years of how long your budgies is expected to live around 12-15 years it is nothing and is worth it all in the end.

Please be patience, don't put your hands in all the time, first start working with having him eat from your hand with millet. He doesn't know you are not going to hurt him all he sees is a big hand wanting to touch him and to him that is like a predator ready to chomp on him. Anything he does like back away, skittish, bite is all natural instincts of protecting himself.

Also I am not sure if his wings are clipped, also aides in taming your bird. Never let your bird out of your cage until he trusts you and it is in a small room. The worest thing someone can do is let out their unclipped, not tamed bird and it becomes a ping pong on the wall with them flying into everything, they finally are so exhausted from you chasing them not a positive experience.

These are some tips you can start with and also read the article sorry so long :).

in that second picture it looks like cere is turning brown which would mean a girl. Pretty would suit her as a name.

I agree, girl :(

I'm in Perth also, so if you need a hand taming her or if you'd like her wings clipped to help you I'm not far away probably (unless you're North of the river) hehe :(

Thanks for all the replies :hap:

I think I'm making progress with her. I had my hand right up near her and she flinched a little, she didn't move. I started talking to her and she was closing her eyes and yawning lol. She also puffed the feathers up and had a shake.

Libby, thanks for the offer, might take you up on it one day :hap:. But yeah I do live NOR. All the way up in Joondalup haha.

congrats and welcome to the land of being owned by a budgie!

Read Ellys article it is great I forget how many times I have ready it!

Ask lots of questions everyone here is aways really to help and please don't think cause you have a female Budgie that she will never talk, I have known female Budgie that chat along, granted not as good as male Budgies but they can do it if you really want them to. :D

Hi,

Time, effort, affection gentle hands and she will get used to you.

Generally speaking its true that males will bond and make better talkers, but hens can as well if you spend the time.

Females do tend to get a bit cranky and bite harder it can be very tricky keeping a female happy. (I am talking about budgies).

Good luck

Thanks for everything. I finally decided on a name for her. Lambchop, it's kind of an ongoing joke between my Partner and I :D.

I bought some Millet just tonight, so when I come home from tafe I will try her with it.

Any suggestions on what to do with it? Do I just put it in my hand and wait for her to come to me? (If she wants to?)

I think she is beginning to trust me, when I put my hand in her cage, she was all sleepy like and didn't really seem to have any issues with my hand about half an inch away from her, I also heard her making the grinding beak sound.

Is that a good sign? Hahaha.

This is my first Budgie. So I am still really unsure of everything.

WE HAVE SUCCESS!! I finally got Lambchop to sit on my finger. Took her a bit to realise she was, then she calmed down. YAY!

I brought Olive inside near her cage and I was playing with her and had on my hand, so I think that might have helped the process too.
