A small number of my birds do that, but they are birds all from the same breeder. His birds are raised where the father raises all babies from the 2 week old mark. He removes the hens and lets the dad finish raising the babies. So, I am wondering if these boys are conditioned to being the main caregivers due to this. Link to comment

She is fostering an egg due to a hen laying one in the bottom of her cage. The egg is from these parents..... http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r145/ka...es/DSCF1791.jpg my fault the hen laid on the bottom of her cage, as I shifted her cage into one of the new units and she didnt like moving. But her next egg should end up in the nestbox. moved the egg from the blue pair to this pairs nestbox as I know the blue baby will be the foster chick. Edited November 26, 2008 by KAZ Link to comment

What I would like to do would be to cross one of those Kings Quails with a hen, they seem to lay an egg a day almost every day & the size of the egg compared to a laying hen is enormous. They seem to cover the ten okay, but feeding them if they all hatch well that's another thing. It used to be that Budgies just laid 6 eggs, most of mine are now laying 7 or 8, but as Dave said if you get a strain that all lay 10 eggs you will have to have pairs especially paired up as feeders. I may mark some eggs and move them today if I have suitable nests to put them in. Failing that, if she is coping with incubation, I will move some chicks once hatched. Link to comment
