All you do is pluck a medium sized feather from the bird put it in an envelope and post it away, it costs about $25. But in all honesty budgies are very easy to sex visually and it would really be a waste of money. It is clearly a hen and as she gets older it will become even more obvious. Link to comment

That is so wrong. It applies only when the colour on the cere comes in fully at around the age of their first moult or 5-6 months of age. Then the sex of a normal budgie is evident to all. People who say blue for boys and pink for girls are not taking into account that in certain budgie mutations ceres look different and also YOUNG budgies do not have the colour of pink or blue in the same way as a budgie of say 5-6 months old. This is where sexing a budgie by the inexperienced goes wrong. Link to comment

Kaz is right that blue means boy and pink means girl is incorrect, with budgies you are more likely to be correct if you think pink means BOY instead. With some mutations the cere of the male never turns blue and stays pink even into adulthood, however the cere of a female no matter what the mutation will turn brown once she begins to mature and starts churning out that estrogen. If you look back up at Neat's pictures of the baby hen, you will see the cere is gradually changing shade from the beak upwards - darkest at the base then slowly lightening until the nostrils, where the light rings are very visible. I think this can be a tell-tale sign as well, as the cere of a male seems to remain pretty even for a longer period of time than the hen's do, although they will eventually show a slight graduated color change as well. I have been breeding Budgies for 37 years. If you have been breeding budgies for 37 yrs and have to wait till the cere is coloured to be able to tell male from female you cannot be selling or rehoming any baby budgies then. Not ones you can be sure are male or female anyway Any breeder with experienece can tell what sex their babies are by 6 weeks of age and often sooner. I can pick mine at 2 weeks in the nest. Harder is telling by photos on here with differences in colour and relying on differences in monitors. I learn to sex my budgie babies after only 2 yrs of breeding mainly by paying attention to info from this forum. To say male blue beak female brown is not allowing for the differences that some mutations have when sexing baby budgies either as that rule does NOT apply over all budgie types. Their ceres stayed like that apart from the times they went brown when they were in season. I tend to think that if the cere looks very pale blue, whitish blue, or blue at the bottom but more white at the top, then it's probably a hen. If it looks pink or purple when a baby then it's probably a male. The ones I have trouble with are when they're kind of pinky purple all over but kind of pale around the nostrils. But in your case it seems fairly clear to me that it's a hen. But I guess all this is fairly crude estimating based on photos of a young budgie. Link to comment
