Hi. I am really wondering if my baby budgie is male or female. The lady i bought from said he is definitely male because of the little bluish tendency in the cere. What do you think? He is about 6 weeks old.

if the photo is not shown, please click maleorfemale

Also my second concern is, if those dark spots in his/her beak will disappear as he/she gets older? It's actually not a big issue for me but just would like to know something new.(The black dirt sticked at the tip is out of question)

Thanks.

I am no expert, but let me guess.

the black will disappear.

I think it is a little girl. I think the white circles aroudn the cere indicate it is a girl.

I think your new budgie is female. The black streaks will fade soon, they will be gone within a month. But the view on my monitor looks like the tip of the beak is missing? Is that just the camera angle?

Yes it's because of an angle. It makes me a little happy to know the black shades will be gone :( .

But for the babies it seems to me that it's always confusing to talk about sexing. What about these two examples in http://www.budgietalk.com/budgiegender.html

The examples in 3rd and 4th pictures also have rings around nostrils. However they are said to be male.

LOL most of those birds were mine - pics 1,2 and 4. :( In the 4th picture (with the 3 birds) the male is on the right - the cere color is more even with almost no noticable color change around the nostrils, the other 2 are female - with the whitish rings. Is that what you were looking at?

Wow ! How come your birds are used as examples in that website : ). Surprized to know that. Actually, the third picture (from above, the single one) was the one that confused me most.

The pictures were posted with permission for examples of ceres in baby birds. The 1st picture was taken right after she fledged at about 30 days, it is actually the hen in the far right of my signature. :( The rest (from the website) I do not have anymore, they have new owners. Although not my bird, in the 3rd picture the cere is pretty even-toned so male. I think the reflection of the flash makes identification difficult sometimes.

Thanks for the link, I have already seen it though.

But i'm really confused about this and still not very convinced. For example in your second message in that link, the last one of 'baby to young hens' (with the beak open) and the first one of 'baby boys' (closed eyes) look pretty much the same. (Of course the ceres)

Both have no white or any rings and same colour.

Also, the second budgie in 'baby boys' has a white ring like mine.

Am i getting too much ? :wacko::D

It can be confusing as some of the cere colours differ depending on the mutation of the budgie. Can you try and post some more pictures ? No flash, natural light conditions etc.

I am mixed on it because it does look round and bulbous like a male cere and males can have nasal rings also especially when they are going from the pink to the blue stage, more pics would be helpful in a week or so ;).

I feel it's a hen. The blueish tinge gets many people thinking its a boy, where infact it's a hen - a male's cere is pinky/purple :budgiedance:
