Posted June 5, 200816 yr Now that I have finished at uni I've realised I need something to do with my time So... something I have always wanted to do is be a wildlife carer. I've taken the first step on this road and I will be manning "Wildline", which is the Victorian wildlife rescue hotline, for two hours a week. Once I have done this for a while and done a few courses I will organise to be supervised by a wildlife shelter and start doing my own rescues I'm just gonna start slow for the time being as I do still have work commitments for a little while so I can't really dive in head first and I have put my name down to do a bunch of training days on rehabilitating flying foxes, rescue and transport, sustainable wildlife shelters, etc. I am also helping to design a brand new school education program which should be fantastic (my 'field' is environmental education) Should be really interesting
June 6, 200816 yr That sounds like a great step towards what you want to do! Good on you! I would love to get into caring for wildlife at some point down the track to.
June 6, 200816 yr great mb. Me and my mum are wildlife rescuers too. Have done alot of rescues, including kangaroos, tawny frogmouth babies etc. Its great fun but devastating at times too. I also do Wildline.
June 7, 200816 yr Way to go MB Good to know I'll have a bird-crazy person as a registered wildlife carer that I can send my wildlife cases to
June 7, 200816 yr Author Chryso at this stage I do alot of the pet bird rescues where the owners can't be located, one of my galahs and the corella are both escaped birds taken in by my local wildlife rescuers and then passed on to me when it was apparent that they were not actually wild birds and their owners couldn't be found. I have done wildlife care for birds before, my first and most beloved was as red wattle bird who used to come back and visit us for many years after he was released
June 16, 200816 yr how wonderful, you must take pics of some of your rescues and keep us posted on what you come across, certainly a learning experience for you and you can transfer on to us
June 16, 200816 yr Author Hey Elly if you scan a line or to down on my album : http://s187.photobucket.com/albums/x259/erinleighalexmax/ You will see a sweet little girl called Katie, she isn't a rescue, she's a pet but she's good practice
June 16, 200816 yr Thats great! I work at a vet that often looks after baby possums, baby birds and injured wildlife - Tawny Frogmouths are the best
June 16, 200816 yr Author I had a tawny a few years ago called Furby While he was a baby he lived on a branch in the corner of my bedroom, he would hang out there and make his little mopoke sounds all night, I didn't mind though cause he was gorgeous Edited June 16, 200816 yr by melbournebudgies

(much cuter than owls) We had two juveniles (wild ones) at the vet last year - had to fed them dead mice though (yuck! and I actually love pet mice ), they didn't quite get the fact that they were supposed to eat them though. Eventually we let them go once they had grown up a bit.
June 16, 200816 yr Author Yeah Furby was a rescue, he went too. I can't help giving them names especially if they are special like he was.
June 16, 200816 yr Yeah, tawny's are adorable, shame you have to let them go. Guess its better for them though.
June 16, 200816 yr Good on ya MB, at least you can fill in the spare time with things you love, wildlife
