Most budgies leave the nest at 4-5 weeks of age, which means your new budgie will be about 5-6 weeks. They often dont wean until 6-7 weeks of age, so make sure you get confirmation from the breeder that your birdie is eating completely on his own.

I personally do not sell until at least 6-7 weeks and definately eating on its own for at least 1 week.

One week out of the nest sounds a bit too young :P Often they can get "depressed" and stop eating unless they have had a few weeks with parents or other youngsters learning to eat and fly.

I have had 3 chicks in the nest, the youngest is almost 6 weeks and they just refused to leave the box. I would put them in the bottom of the cage and they would fly straight back to the nest box. I know they can eat themselves, have seen them cracking seed and eating the vegies but they just go back to the nest box and squawk for the hen to go and feed them. She is looking very tired and thin so today I have put them in the nursery cage with 3 others that are a bit older and although they weren't happy they seem to be doing fine, I'll just keep a close eye on them for the next few weeks. Little devils :P

The stats say that more and more are staying at home with mum and dad rather than getting their own places. The cost of buying a house and even groceries, so it's a good deal while you can get it.....Oh wait we're talking about budgies aren't we :hap:

I may need to rephrase. They spend 1 week in the nappy cage with other youngsters. I place them in the nappy cage always on a Saturday so I can monitor them for two days at regular intervals, any sign of them not eating I place them back with their parents (No nest box as I remove this once they hae fledged)I them before and after work. Prior to that they are out of the nest box and with their parents for 1-2 weeks.
