**KAZ** 0 Posted April 19, 2008 (edited) A RAT has found its way into my husbands aviary....dug up through the soil floor. We have just discovered the rat has got into the aviary and it has killed and partly eaten three canaries, a finch and a quail last night alone !!! **KAZ** 0 Posted April 19, 2008 A RAT!!! ERRK!! I am so sorry Kaz - I hope you catch the bugger!!!!! Setting traps inside the aviary, cutting back some shrubs outside the aviary so it cannot access the roof as easily and allowing the dogs into the area. The dogs are "ratters" so here's hoping. It had better not get into my budgie aviaries :fear
melbournebudgies 0 Posted April 19, 2008 On the up side, if you have rats you generally are less likely to have mice... But that doesn't help the birds
Wayno 0 Posted April 19, 2008 Kaz, I hope you get him, I feel as though I have Mozed you into a RAT Appearing. I'm sorry... Here I am complaining about Mice and you have a RAT. I worked all day on the aviary today, concreted all holes i could see and found 4 dead this morning, so Wayno is on his way back. Looked out to the aviary this evening with a light on and still can see some but i have bait and traps everywhere. I hope i win eventually.
melbournebudgies 0 Posted April 19, 2008 We had never seen a rat or a mouse here, inside or outside. I accidentally left the laundry door ajar one warm night over summer. I was awaken at 3am by an almightly screeching acompanied by the cat growling at high speed through the house. Thinking there was another cat in the house or something I was out of bed in a flash and into the kitchen only to find a juvenile rat hanging from the top of my back wire door, looking very regretful for wandering in through that open door. Not knowing quite what to do I managed to get the wire door open and chase it down the door and back outside! If you think chasing a huntsman is bad try a brown rat!! Sorry felt maybe you all neded a funny story to take the edge off

Not your fault...just one of those things...hope its only ONE and hope we get him. Cannot tolerate losses of birds to a nasty feral germ laden rat. I believe my aviaries and birdroom are safe...Well, I hope so anyway. Good to hear you have had some success with the mice. We find the mice are more around during the wet weather...they dig in then We had never seen a rat or a mouse here, inside or outside. He climbed back into bed, the cat jumped up on the bed with a massive rat in its mouth and dropped it on the bed to show what a good hunter she was. Rat went in one direction...the cat after the rat, dad after the cat and Mum screamed till her lungs would burst and climbed on top of the wardrobe !! Norm 0 Posted April 19, 2008 Sorry to hear about your rat problem Kaz, they are really bad new, hope you find it real quick. I have been battling mice & rat problems where I live here in the bush [25 years] & only keep them under control, never really get rid of them, just more & more come out of the bush, especially this time of year as it cools down...good luck to you both, you will need it. **KAZ** 0 Posted April 20, 2008 The RAT killed another two canaries last night. Ken thinks its hiding IN the aviary and not coming in now. He is trying to find where it is.
**Liv** 0 Posted April 20, 2008 :fear It's one thing to have rodents running around eating bird seed, but to be killing birds, that is NOT ON!!!!!! I really hope you get that murderous vermin before it does any more damage!!!!!!
**KAZ** 0 Posted April 20, 2008 Ken has just figured out he tunnelled in again...he is off to the hardware store today to get some concrete and he is going to cement anywhere the rat can get in.
melbournebudgies 0 Posted April 20, 2008 If he gets some chicken wire and lays it on the aviary floor and puts bricks around the edges or buries it under the dirt that'll stop it.
**Liv** 0 Posted April 20, 2008 (edited) I have all my fingers and toes crossed for you and Ken. I hope you stop that rat! a picture of a friendly kitty for the rat to admire next time it comes by... Edited April 20, 2008 by **Liv**

**KAZ** 0 Posted April 20, 2008 If he gets some chicken wire and lays it on the aviary floor and puts bricks around the edges or buries it under the dirt that'll stop it. Good idea. I was hoping Ken would use up some old aviary wire I had and cement it under his new cement floor section, but he didnt and I was away for the day so I couldnt suggest it. He thinks he has solved the problem but tomorrow morning will tell the tale of success or not.

Norm 0 Posted April 21, 2008 Good luck Kaz & Ken…stir up some of those cats lazing on the lounge inside to help. They must be getting life too easy…LOL. Or are they too highly bred to lower themselves to manual work.
**KAZ** 0 Posted April 21, 2008 Good luck Kaz & Ken…stir up some of those cats lazing on the lounge inside to help. They must be getting life too easy…LOL. Or are they too highly bred to lower themselves to manual work. My cat Ruski will hunt and kill rats and mice. Kens cat Orlando is sight impaired so he is useless and the new kittens are inside cats and too small for now. The dogs are rat and mouse catchers, killers and eaters
Norm 0 Posted April 21, 2008 I was going to say dogs too, as I thought you had them also...they must have been slack of late...trouble is rats like the night & often dogs are fast asleep then.
