Can I Incubate Eggs And Chick For A Short Period

Recommended Posts

DSCF0539.jpg

These are My birds Eggs and Bub, as some of you are aware Mybird has a health problem that I think needs a vets attention.....

I am asking am I able to incubate these while I take her to the vet for a check???

If so will a lamp do, I do not have an incubator nor can a i get my hands on one or buy one this week ....

When raising day old chicks we use a desk lamp with a low wattage bulb, you need to make sure it doesn't dry out in there too much or get too hot. If you are going to do it then you would want to do a test with an empty box to work out where to place the light and you might want to try putting a damp facewasher in one corner to help with the humidity.

Ook so do I take the eggs and baby out put into another container put a 25wlamp over it with a damp cloth in it ???

I have never done this before ..... Will she reject them when she gets back ?????

How long is it going to take you to go to the vet? If it's not long a warm hot water bottle(not too hot) placed under the nest should last long enough.

Vets is 8 - 12 mins away ... Not long at all and they take appointments so I shouldn't be long???

If I put a hot water bottle under the nest box dad will be able to feed the babies still and the eggs should still stay warm .....

That would be your best bet, far less risky. In reality they'll probably be fine for that amount of time without a hot water bottle as long as they are somewhere fairly warm, but the hot water bottle won't hurt. Just make sure it's not too hot - you don't want dehydrated babies.

I have everything crossed for you hoping that your hen, her eggs and chick are going to be okay. I feel for the tough decisions you have had to make (((HUGS)))

Generally, the hen is only off eggs for around 20 minutes. Anyway you can take her nestbox with you and her all together ?

Anything you try will be a risk, as birds know better than we do about keeping all the eggs rotated and at the right temperatures. Fingers crossed for all the remaining eggs mate :hap:

A friend brought me some fertile eggs once. He put them in a container with seed under and all around...under the container was a wheat bag warmed in the microwave. Most of those eggs hatched.

Thanks Guys No 2 hatched today ..... little red eye heheh...

5pm is the appoint with Avian Vet .... Very lucky that some how another avain Vet has taken place of the one on holidays ... *hope this is a good sign .....

Vet advised me, to bring the nest box INSIDE the house ( would have been easier if she was in a cage and not an aviary )and place a warmed hot water bottle underneath with extra nesting materials inside.

They have the xray machine there and will be ready for when we get there ......So that mum isn't away too long I will be taking my notebook too so I can write everything down and update you all on everything ....

So I have everything crossed that this isn't a bad thing, In saying that I am willing to do all the raising if the Bad happenes ......

Great to hear it's all sorted out. I look forward to the update :D

Might be a good idea to get the vet to show you how to crop feed (if you don't know already ) while you are there
