Not sure but I have heard of the breeding aid. My opinion is that all you need to help your birds breed is a compatable pair that are in condition, Fresh water and food, Calcium and of course a nest box. I have seen the budgie starter at our meetings for sale, never have bothered to look at it, might make o point of doing so next time.

Depending on the brand (some differ) Budgie starter is a supplement for young fledglings.

Again depending on the brand. Breeding aid is for birds with young to assist with feeding.

Boosting them into breeding condition ??? Only a complete diet can help with that and even then it's up to the birds. I have hens that were out of condition 6 months ago when I got them. Still look the same today. Despite a extensive diet and every supplement under the sun!!

There isn't different brands. Only the one.

Budgie Starter is from wombaroo and is used by most of the top breeders. The past President of ANBC MR Nigel Tonkin uses it.

Breeding Aid is from Vetafarm and for the increase in Vitamins and minerals required for egg development.

I use and recommend both very highly.

Thanks for the info Daz :hap:

Nothing out of a packet is ever much chop! you still have to add things to the mix.

So if ya going to go to that much trouble why not make your own!

One trip to the health food shop and I have enough to last the breeding season.

There is a lot I don't know. I believe that the day you think you know it all is the day you should quit. :D

I wouldn't touch some egg & biscuit mixture with a 10 foot pole. I find it is mostly biscuit and not high enough in protein.

I like around the 20% to 25% protein levels for the birds.

I am trying a Finch and Budgie Crumble instead of the Passwall Crumble.

Finch%20Crumbles%202Kg.gif

Ingredients:

Manufactured from whole cereal grains including maize, wholegrain legumes, groats, amino acids, lysine and methionine, salt, vitamins A, D3, E, K, B12, thiamine, riboflavin, panthothenic acid, pyridoxine, folacin and biotin, minerals, calcium, phosphorus, cobalt, iodine, copper, iron, manganese, zinc and selenium and natural organic acids.

Guaranteed Analysis:

Min Crude Protein 19.0%

Min Crude Fat 7.0%

Max Crude Fibre 3.5%

Added Salt 0.1%

Crumbles100.jpg

Ground triticale, wheat, barley, maize and oats. Whey and soy proteins, meat meal, lysine, methionine, vegetable oils, omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, vitamins A, B1, B2, B6, B12, C, D3, E, K, nicotinamide, pantothenic acid, folic acid, choline, inositol, calcium, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, magnesium, zinc, iron, manganese, copper, iodine, selenium.

Min Crude Protein 15%

Min Crude Fat 5%

Max Fibre 7%

Max Salt 1%

The Vetafarm is lower in Salt and Higher in Protein.

I add half to one of Budgie Starter.

Budgie%20Starter100.jpg

Ground cereals, bread crumbs, whey and soy proteins, hydrolysed casein, lysine, methionine, vegetable oils, omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, vitamins A, B1, B2, B6, B12, C, D3, E, K, nicotinamide, pantothenic acid, folic acid, choline, inositol, calcium, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, magnesium, zinc, iron, manganese, copper, iodine, selenium.

Min Crude Protein 23%

Min Crude Fat 10%

Max Fibre 6%

Max Salt 1%

The birds are feed on this everyday from the egg to 3 months old.

All the breeding pairs are on this from the time they are paired up.

You have to watch giving to much protein or you can blow there liver.

You need to take into account that they are also eating seed at around 15% plus another 20% soft food can get to much.

It usually takes 2 or 3 years when you join the hobby to work out the best feeding regime. Often a mistake chopping and changing because so and so uses something it must work so I'll use it. Fad feeding we used to call it.

No conflict Neat!

All the stuff on here is just peoples opinion that's all. You really have to find out what's best in your situation yourself.

The best advise for me has always come from the most unlikely source when I'm not really listening!

I remember some of the old breeders in the 80's that used to preach to me the craft of keeping lifestock. A lot of there words have always rung true through the years.

There gone now! Wish they were here with there" listen young fella!! see that bird there......."

Hiya Neat,

I also use Passwells Budgie starter and Breeding Aid. I mix vegies in with the Budgie starter and it goes into the breeding cabinets when they haved young to feed and in the toddler flight.

I am trying a Finch and Budgie Crumble instead of the Passwall Crumble.

I'd be interested to see how this goes for you, Daz. I was looking at it yesterday before I placed an order with vetafarm.

Feathers.

Feathers, I was placed on it by Dave Ganzer who was the president of the ANBC back in 2005/2006. Dave has won three nationals. Last year came 1st and 3rd in the Dominant Pied section. He uses it every day as well.

I have been using it for two years now and won't be changing unless some thing better appears. :P
