So... I'm having a bit of an issue. One of my males Tweet Tweet (TT) has a girlfriend, Crackle. They had a clutch of eggs in Nov/Dec but she left them and they didn't hatch. Well... he is a sex machine... He is constantly after her, and when she was inside with an illness he was after another hen. Crackle is sometimes interested... he feeds her, preens her etc... but when it comes to the down and dirty, she tries to get away... "I have a headache dear... not today etc..." We all know the drill :D . My question is this. I have a large mirror which I'm thinking about putting in the aviary. Do you think he will find this and decide to display his manhood towards this and leave poor crackle alone? Or will this cause problems? I know the whole 'if you want your bird to bond with you don't give them a mirror' but that's not my issue. If I wasn't going overseas in three weeks I'd let them try for another clutch but the timing is not right and I can't expect my Dad to have to worry about breeding problems as well as looking after the general wellbeing of my birds and lizards. It's just not fair... So any thoughts would be great...

My thoughts, for all they are worth...I would NOT put a mirror in the aviary...not for any reason.

I am bad. I have a small mirror in my aviary... Pheobe is the only one who plays with it - she is a little scatter brained and it works for keeping her from pestering the others hehehehe

I might add - it works for her... but if the others start to play with it too then it will be gone quick smart!

Just who is responsible for the large amounts of VIAGRA that is being slipped into the budgie seed lately ? HMMMMM ?

These POOR POOPED HENS ... they just don't have it easy ... do they ?

You got me on this one maesie ... I would separate them & put them in 2 cages instead of one. It would be annoying for your Dad who has to tend to 2 cages instead of one. But ... it would be harder for TT to do the wild thing between 2 sets of bars, & Crackle can still visit with him & be company but not have to put up with his demands. I don't know if a mirror will make much of a difference.

TT has the URGE & he ain't about to be denied !

How about one of them fake budgie buddy's in their or his cage ? One of those ones that look like they are stuck on a perma ball ... they wiggle & jiggle like jello & never say NO ! or I REALLY HAVE A HEADACHE !

DARN MEN ARE SUCH ANNOYING THINGS AREN'T WE ? I blame it on SPRING & hormones in the water.

Actually Maesie ... in all honesty. I would be scared or concerned if Crackle " CRACKS ? " & goes nuts & attacks TT . Hens can make a mess of a male bird if they don't want to mate or put up with his demands. How do you think your Dad could put up with an attack ? He'd be really upset & would he know how to give first aid ? I would hate to see anyone taking care of my birds have to witness a PMS HEN after a mate or male bird. That is one scary scene !!!!!

You kinda have a problem here. I hope someone can give you some good ideas how to deal with your boy.

Did you think about less day light for the birds ... keeping them in the dark a little longer during the day ? Would that help ?

I dunno ... Good luck with this.

OH GREAT ... NOW I FIND OUT YER BIRDS ARE IN AN AVIARY ? That doesn't help much with bringing in a fake budgie does it ... DUH. NEVER MIND !

Is TT hurting Crackle? If she's saying not tonight honey and she's not getting hurt then the possibilities of a clutch is pretty slim isn't it?

A hen that doesn want to know and a cock that is over zealous can make the hen sick from the stress of trying to put him off....be aware and keep them apart.

Thanks all... I have seen them mate a few times but she is not laying them on the floor, so I'm not worried about them having a clutch in the aviary. She doesn't seem to be too worried by him... at times she just tells him where to go. When they're in the aviary they have plenty of things to play with and I'm trying to add native branches more often to keep 'his' mind off his manly needs. The daylight is an issue as they're in an aviary were the daylight is controlled by mother nature. I'll keep an eye on them...

A hen that doesn't want to know and a cock that is over zealous can lead to the cock literally being hen picked to death, too!

Hey Jimmy, we love your advice! :D And you are right... the chances of a hen laying an egg in the aviary if there is no nestbox is slim.

I like Neat's idea quote ...

It's a male thing they JUST DON'T KNOW WHEN NO MEANS NO :(Laughing out loud):

Didn't Nancy Reagan start a campaign ... JUST SAY NO ! ( or was that about drugs ? )

Saying "NO" to me would be useless. Women ask me all the time .. would you like some pie ? cake ? a donut ? I just can't say NO ! NO MEANS YES ... MORE PIE MORE CAKE MORE DONUTS PLEASE ! Come on baby ... Gimme more ! Yes Neat, we're such pigs. heh heh

Must have been horrible! Things have settles down. I think them being in the small cage made him go a little stir crazy  . They seem happy to preen and feed and stop at that. I'll be watching them like a hawk and have some 'stand by' plans for when I go to Bali if need be. Thanks for all your advice and warnings... and I have decided NOT to put a mirror in the aviary...

I have an idea Maesie.

Don't go to Bali. Elly & I will go instead. You can stay home & babysit your TT & Crackle & make sure there is no Hanky Panky.

Elly & I are freezing & really need to unwind from the cold. Besides. I need to get it thru Elly's pretty head ... NO MORE DRESSES on Cabela. Bali will do the trick !

Right Elly ? You packing your suitcases ? I'm almost ready.
