we have a tame female budgi named pickles, she is about a year old. we have had her in her cage outside for about a month while we tame a new budgie we just bought.

Today i brought her inside and let her out of the cage and noticed that water is coming out of her bum every couple of minutes which we think it is a bit starnge as this has never happened before.

She also went to have a bit of a flap and cannot fly she just flies low for a second then goes straight for the ground.

we have been letting her inside every now and again for a flap while she has been outside and has been fine every other time.

Does anyone know if this is a problem?

Thanks guys :)

Do you have any photos???

Hmmm The watery poop could be stress related....

How big is the cage she has been in??? the not flying well could be muscle weakness due to being in a small cage for an extended period of time.. She could also be over weight and too heavy to fly....

Check her breast bone and see if there is some "meat" there. if its sharp she might be unwell. if it's really padded she might need to go on a diet :)

Thanks for a quick reply.

No unfortunatly we dont have any photo's.

Her cage is huge so she definatly has enough room for a flap around.

She is also a relativly small budgie, she doesnt look like she has changed size.

It is really weird cause we brought her in last week and she was fine then, im a little bit worried and because of the public holiday the avians are closed :D

We were maybe wondering she wouldnt have eggs would she?? :)

We also noticed the other day that there was a pidgeon hanging around the cage... Could this be a factor?

I doubt the pigeon would be a factor...

Is she molting and lost any flight feathers? this can give them troubles flying for a short while.

Budgies can fly perfectly fine when making an egg and her poops would be about 4 x the size of normal if she were about to lay.

Is she fluffed and have that "sick-bird-look"

Is she acting any differently (other than her lack of flight??)

I would be getting her checked out... better to be safe than sorry. Just my opinion. As for Pidgeons... well I call them the rats of the air... no factual basis for it just don't like them :D

okay, well that is a relief, no she is not really acting any different i dont think apart from her wanting to pretty much stay in her cage when she normally loves to come out and that she is leaking water from her bum every couple of minutes, i did happen to notice that she has about 3 long grey feathers on the bottom of her cage, and i was actually just thinking that they could be her wing feathers.

Should i maybe give the vet a call tomorrow just to double check?

Thankyou for all your help as well :D

Pigeons can well be a factor actually. They pass on diseases. Was the cage top accessible for the pigeon to be up on the cage and poop through the bars ?

Being that the cage was outside, can mice have been through the cage ?

Sounds like the bird has a gut infection which you can get from mice being through their food and water, or wildbirds pass on disease. I wouldnt let it anywhere near the new bird. Put the sick one in cage with a warm lamp nearby and some suplha meds in the water and watch it very closely. She is losing fluids very fast and the sulpha meds will stop that, but you do need a vet visit as she seems to have picked up a disease ...either from the pigeon or maybe mice.

nah we have a doona sitting on top of the cage and we saw her ignoring the pidgeon

Mice would not have been through her cage, they can't get into it.

This is not an emergency is it?

Vets are closed due to the public holiday is it okay to wait till tomorrow.

If i put that stuff in the water and it doesnt have anything wrong with it other than stress will it affect my budgie in anyway?

Good point Kaz. I knew wild bird poop can be bad, but unless the bird got in the aviary i couldn't see how any poop would get in the aviary to infect the budgies. How could I forgot that many aviarys have open wire roofs for wild birds to poop though :D - They can't do that to mine though (phew!!)

okay....you need to urgently stop the losing body fluids thing. The sulpha meds will do that and then go to the vets when they are open next. But in a smaller cage with a warm lamp nearby for now and the sulpha meds in the water. Wont hurt.

It is commonly believed that pigeons can poop through the face of an aviary by pooping as they fly towards or away from the aviary or cage. Many breeders will roof an aviary with a large overhang to prevent this. Edited by KAZ

I have an entire pergola and house protecting the face of my aviary hahaha.

Kaz is right. better to be safe then sorry :D

Petshops will be closed today... but good bird dealers are normally open everyday. hope you find one near by.

My guess is if she has been an inside bird and now has been put outside , she may have been getting night frights and has not been resting properly , Now her condition has deterioated and she has contracted some sort of bug . If she is not eating properly and continues to have watery poops she will go down hill fast.

Or she may be getting a cold breeze in the night this can cause watery poops , check that she has a place to get out of any breese that may blow up in the night , she may not be use to the cool nights being outside.

good point lonebudgie. That is a possibility... I would still give the bird something to stop the runs though djelibaybi, just to be on the safe side and a trip to the avian vet tomorrow...

sorry can't help you with the pet shop... but if you can't get a vet or a pet shop today why don't you start by cleaning the cage/food and water containers and getting the feathers out... you'll be able to look at the feathers and figure out if they are her wing feathers...

what color is Pickles?

It is only the main flight feathers that will stop her from flying. these feathers are about 2-3 inches long.

The sulfa liquid I once used was a yellow colour, Now I buy it in a powdered form from a vet supplies and mix it when required. The powder is white in colour.
