I was blessed the other day in that on my evening walk, I noticed that outside a house in the next street they had put up a new veranda and on the footpath outside there were 5 sheets of brand new Bluescope steel zincalume measuring 3 &1/2 metres long by 800 wide and an 5 metre piece of C-channel. The owner was gracious enough to allow me to take it away for nothing - what a blessing! Now, we are working on doing the new aviary [the converted garden shed] and am wondering if Xincalume sheets need anything done to them prior to using in an aviary - also the C-channel? We have also taken your sage advise Kaz, partly, in moving the garden shed frame over towards the existing aviary and we are also being blessed in that a friend is getting us a smaller and wider aviary to use as a safety cage linking the two larger ones together....well, that is the plan anyway. I have photos of the garden shed having its sheets ripped off and we are using a flat roof instead of having the gable roof it originally had and will post them later on. Thanks for the help. I dont think budgies either "taste test" or nibble on the zinc. Its just not interesting enough for them or accessible. But many people will wash down an aviary with a solution of vinegar and water to neutralise the zinc. Look forward to your photos Edited March 3, 2008 by KAZ spelling Link to comment

Robert has to do the work in patches as he works nights, sleeps daytime and does a great deal of overtime. I mainly am the gopher and tea/cool drink maker as well as placating the puppies...and of course the one who comes up with the ideas in the first place [ with added suggestions thank you Kaz]. :hap: We are going to plant some trees - more bottlebrush along the fenceline so as to give more shade to the entire area as well as hopefully being able to use the pitched roof trusses to make a shady seating area in the middle of the 2 larger aviaries. There are bottlebrushes at the rear of them and an apricot and orange tree as well. The shape of the whole thing will be like an upside down U in the end - hopefully. Link to comment

One has completely resolved itself for now [ cooler weather for a few days now] and I managed to get the energy to get up off the lounge to take a few pics of Robert working away this morning. So here 'tis an update pictorally... and Notice the Rain Guage we have put up in hope of some precipitation!!! God willing! Rain has delayed play - which we do not mind in the least. Our next door neighbour has offered us her double aviary which of course we are not knocking back so our plans are once again changing as to the layout. We also have a hexagonal [ 6 sided?] shadehouse that has lain unused for years so we have taken 2 of the sides, one complete with a flywired door and straightened out the side struts from being angled to straight so that we can use these as safety door entry to the 3 aviaries and roofing for the safety area as well as the converted garden shed. All plans in place but time to do it...now there's the rub! as they say!!! Link to comment

The rain has ceased for now but may be back on again tomorrow, so the grass is now definitely greener in the back than it was. The neighbour's aviary has been rolled in from next door along the road and through the gates [ had to dismatle them first!] with the aid of lengths of PVC pipe - front to back, roll -front to back, roll etc etc etc. Older PVC is much stronger than todays flimsy stuff! Anyway, only one car got held up out on the road so not too bad. The aviary itself is not as large as we were told, being 1680 x 1180 with division in the middle and 2 front entry doors but none inside from one to the other...SO this is going to be 'butted' up [ left side to right side] against the existing old aviary [ same height as each other] and will have one side used with shelving added to house breeding cages[ this is the plan but who really knows what'll happen in the end!] and the other either as a 'hospital/quarantine' area or a stageing area for the youngsters just out of the nest. The right side of the neighbour's aviary will be butted up against the left side of the larger garden shed aviary. There is a height difference between this and the other 2 so Hubby is going to add rectangular, wire covered framework to the smaller aviaries to link it with the larger garden shed one...this will then allow us to cover in the roof area with wire as well. Basically, the 'safety door' area will be at the front of the complex connecting all 3 aviaries with an open square. Confusing??? Anyway, Robert has been cutting lengths of metal to join onto the g.shed frame so he can then attach the zincalume sheets to when he cuts them. Slow progress but when he works the hours he does, it's going to have to be that way and of course FOOTY season is here and we are both great participating Club supporters [ that's real Footy...spelt with and A&F&L !] So that's the score at the moment...more to come! Soon hopefully! Link to comment

So not a 'quarantine area' now. Will have to keep using our little green aviary for that...Oh well...shall just have to be for the youngsters. Thanks for letting me know about the 5 metres zone Kaz. Spoke to hubby and instead of 'butting up' alongside, we will leave a gap between each of the sides and cover these in with mesh and make a solid roof between the existing aviary and the neighbour's one [ which has that side half mesh half tin as opposed to the right side all tin] so it can be an area to store the plastic seed bins etc in. As I said, "Plans - they keep on a changing!" All good fun though and good thing we aren't biting at the bit to get it completed. Link to comment

Progress is slow but it's getting there. New pics. The framework with the safety door in it will be attached to the front of both large aviaries and the aviary with Jack and Jill is going to sit evenly spaced between the old and the new one. There will be a framework with wire between the 'gaps' at the back and a frame has to be made to get the safety roof area between all the same height. This will have wire netting over the top to form the roof. Getting there...pavers are coming soon apparently. Good thing a long weekend coming but so is footy and rain! Link to comment
