Posted December 26, 200717 yr HI If the parents do not seem to be feeding the chicjs, should I move them out of the aviary to prevent them getting hurt?? or should I just leave thema nd see if they get the hang of it. I have not seen the father go in the nest at all. There are still 4 eggs to hatch I think only 2 are fertile. Thanks

You need to be very sure they have no food in their crops as trying to raise babies of that age is very hard unless you are experienced. If this is so you need to be feeding them immediately. They will suck a thin runny forumla in for themselves if you place it at the beak. Photos and check back with us at the if they are truly being fed or cared for or not. Sometimes its hard to see food in the crop of very young babies.

The first one died at 3 days, none of their crops look full like the ones in pictures, If anyone has any photos of newborns crops that would be great thanks. I fed them and they seemed to want it, moving head around and standing up to me. I really dont want to loose any more. Thanks

Have a warm place for them and feed them runny formula as often as they want it. Best of luck. Can be very hard to save them after that and at that age. You have no other breeding pairs with chicks to put them under ? Edited December 26, 200717 yr by KAZ

December 26, 200717 yr Hi Kel, I have been following your post with interest. Thats so great!!!!! I think sometimes it just takes them a little time to figure out what they're meant to be doing with their little babies (Laughing out loud). Good luck and keep us updated. Not sure if others have told you, but to download pics, go to photobucket website, sign in (it's free) and upload your pics, remember to change the size and then copy and paste it into your post. If you get stuck, let us know. maesie xxx
December 27, 200717 yr Have some water ready when the chicks hatch. A drop on the beak will rehydrate them and give them the strength to call for food. Sometimes a maiden hen will fail to feed her first clutch until she gets the idea. A strong calling chick usually gets her going.
December 28, 200717 yr Author Well things are going well, Number 5 hatched today and I have not had to feed them since yesterday. Their crops are getting bigger each day and mum seems to be feeding them the mixture i made up, Thanks for the recipe!!! The difference between number 2 and 5 is huge, they grow so quickly. They still cannot really lift their heads, but they huddle up so tight in their box. I will get around to photos, hopefully tomorrow, but thanks for your help and wishes! This is so exciting, I have become obsessed! :feedbirds:
December 28, 200717 yr Author Here is mum and dad Eve Born xmas eve All the babies If anyone could tell me what colours mum and dad are, I have tried to read up on it but very confusing. ALso any guessing to what the babies may end up being, ( going off mum and dad) Dad has a patch of blue under his wings on back. Thanks Edited December 28, 200717 yr by kel
December 29, 200717 yr The parents are divine, and eve is adorable!!! I'm not good with colours etc so I'll leave it to the experts. Can't wait to see how the little ones turn out though!
December 29, 200717 yr Cant see their ceres from a back shot properly. The one on the left is a double factor dominant pied most likely a violet, but possibly a cobalt. The one on the right is a cinnamonwing green.............congratulations on the babies :fear Edited December 29, 200717 yr by KAZ
December 29, 200717 yr It looks like the Dominant Pied is the cock & the Cinnamon the hen. If the hen is split for Blue you could get both Green & Blue babies, if not all chicks would be Green, but being split for Blue is pretty common, you should get lots of Pieds, but maybe not as much pied on them as Dad, all male chicks will be split for Cinnamon. If Dad is carrying Cinnamon you could get some Cinnamons also, in that case of both sexes. That’s about all you can tell from just looking at the parents, but they could be carrying Recessive factors, so also there could be some surprises…good luck.
December 29, 200717 yr you should get lots of Pieds If dad is a double factor dominant pied which he looks like then all the babies will be single factor dominant pied.
December 29, 200717 yr Author Where is the best place to look for info on colourings ( mutations? ) I find it so confusing, is there anywhere that I can find it it easy to understand. or is ot one of those things you either get it or you dont.
