I was wondering what are my chances of having a successful outcome with moving chicks and eggs into another nesting box outside of the aviary? I cannot move the box that they are in as it is a fixed structure, but I dont want to loose another lot of babies to the other hens attacking them. I was thinking of when the first baby hatches to move them into the new box with the eggs and the parents. Can it be done or should I do it before the eggs hatch. I have a feeling that they are going to hatch in about a week. Any suggestions would be greatful.

It is very risky to move eggs and chicks and still expect parents to continue as normal. Can you move the other birds instead ?......or divide the aviary to give them safety.

Cant really move the other birds as the cockatiels have eggs too and they are in the same section as the birds. Should I move them now, and see how I go. If not, i have an incubator that I could use for them but I am not sure how many times a day I am to routate them inside the machine.

Is the nest box in a position, where you could make a cage around the nestbox. Then you would have a breeding cage ,with the cock & hen in the cage & the other birds, can`t get in.

no not really, I would have to get in there with a drill and some timber and make a landing for the cage to rest on. I will have a look and maybe grab some extra wire and fence the inside off. I will have to see if it is possible. if not I will try and work something out in it.

I just left the aviary, and There might be a way to enclose her section, with a bit of wire. I cannot add a cage there without a bit of drilling, so that is out. but bit of wiring and some wire clips should close their area.

My other problem is that another budgie has started to lay in a different nesting box, this time it isnt a fixed box, so can I remove them and the box into a breeding cage?

Yes....remove that pair and the nestbox. Remove the first egg and keep it safe for a few days until she lays her next egg in the box. Then add the first egg to the box. Reason ? A new place and she may think the egg in the box in a new place isnt her egg. So if she starts laying again in the new box, you can then add the previous egg. :hap:

I brought a nice cage yesterday, so I will be moving the non-fixed box into that, and then during the night remove the other hen and cock into another breeding cage with the eggs, hopefully it will all work out good. If not, I will remove the other hens and see how that goes.

If I were to remove the other hens, would I need to remove the cocks too or will the babies be fine like that. I willhave to remove 4 hens in total.

Basically, breeding creates stress conditions which can make birds sick. Breeding colony style can create a whole lot more stress conditions and a whole new bunch of problems. I used to breed that way. I will never do it that way again. For the sake of a few extra cages or breeding cabinets, its a whole lot easier and better.

Best to remove all spare budgies from the pair with babies. Some adult males can attack chicks too. Hens will do it just to take over a nestbox, but cocks will attack chicks they see as being in their way. They have also been known to try and mount and mate with newly fledged chicks.
