I just spent a lovely afternoon visiting my "Grandson Budgie" ROCKY who lives with his new owner Lynette. Lynette's previous budgie was a talker and he lived to 12 years of age. ROCKY is a YF type 2 skyviolet spangle it looks like.

AAAAROCKY007.jpg

His colour is so vibrant and doesnt really show well on the video and photos. He was adopted as a 7 week old and began to talk within the fortnight starting with I love you...........he is now 7 months old, and is talking like a professional. I was amazed !! While I was there he came out with at least 50 to 70 phrases in the space of an hour or so while he was "chatty". He has much much more to say and its all a credit to his new owner who adores him and whom he adores also.

Here is just some of what he can say

Rocky

Sticky beak

Did you ?

I love you

Come on, Come on

Minky, Minky ( Minky is the cat :D )

Naughty boy

Minky's coming

Mum's at the shops

Mum's at the Casino

Dear boy

I miss Minky

Give me a kiss

Mummy

The kids are coming

Pretty Boy

You've been a good boy

Someone's at the shop

Okay, you're a good boy

Minky...you've been a good boy

Good little chicken

Mummy's good boy

Mummy's pretty boy

You've been a good boy

Mummy's darling

Did you miss me darling ?

You're a good little girl

Pretty one

Come here

Kiss Mum

Talk to the birdies

I tried hard to video him talking and indeed it came out very clear played back from my camera, but translated onto the computer is less clear. Needless to say he was very impressive and whatever he had to say could be heard clearly across the room. He had us in stitches laughing :D

What amazes me about these guys that talk is how they can take a few phrases they have learnt and "mix them up" and create new phrases that totally make sense ..............they must be very intelligent to string words together themselves and make sense of it all :D

yes I agree, Pretty was really good with that...if I wouldn't have gotten Merlin he would have continued but that is okay. Merlin is copying my whistles now and I think he will talk with me talking to him all the time.

I say Merlin baby all the time :hap:

:hap: He's so sweet! Love it when budgies do that! Unfortunately, none of mine ever have but with all my critters, it's really hard to give everybody LOTS of one and one. Couldn't hear it very well over the sound of the fans and birds responding to it, will try later. :ausb:

I had dinner with Rockys Mum and a very good friend the other night and got to see how clever Rocky is all over again. Seems to have doubled his vocabulary but I didnt get to record him that night. Will do so very soon. He was particularly funny when the cat came inside and MINKY the cat got a cuddle from his "mum"....ROCKY made it very clear that Rocky was mums "very good boy" over and over again....seemed jealous that the cat was getting a cuddle :D

wow. As a speech pathologist, I'd be very interested to see any video you could capture. The whole issue of the creative use of language you raise is very interesting.

Its really interesting to me that froma select few words they can create sentences that make sense and mean something. And when the cat got a cuddle he was making the point that HE was Mums best boy and not Minky the cat :D

That is so funny. Rocky sounds like a typical jealous budgie! And a fantastic vocabulary also, you can tell he gets a lot of attention.

Hi libby, a double factor yellowface will appear to have a white face.

Type one or type two denotes whether the yellow 'bleeds' into the blue (type 2) or not (type 1), not whether they are double or single factor.

Yes, i'm aware type two bleeds and type one doesn't but the df creating a whiteface only happens in type one.

I don't think that is correct. Breeding 2 yf2 birds will create some babies with yellow faces and some with white. The whitefaced birds could be normals or DF yf birds. The only way to tell is to breed them with whitefaces to see what the offspring have.

yes breeding yf2 birds will give some with white face and some with yellow face but the ones with white face aren't df type 2's.

Type two can only be masked by a green bird, not hidden or masked by a blue.

where's as a df type 1 can give the white faced birds, whilst also yellows.

there's info on it somewhere on this forum.

As Daz has said in his mutation self test, the mutations which alter visually when in df form are spangle, dom pied and yf1.

Wait, type 2 is a blue bird, not a green one. It may appear to have green on it, but is still a blue-based bird. There is a link in one of these threads to the Master Budgerigar Breeder website, it is explained there pretty well. A DF yf2 will appear to be a whitefaced bird.

I'm aware a yf2 is a blue based bird and not a green. However only a green bird can mask the type 2 gene, not a blue one.

So if shilo is masking yf it has to be type one, which makes rocky a type one

Maybe Rocky is type 1...he certainly is a vibrant shade of skyviolet for sure....not really greenish at all.
