To Cold For Me!

This has not happened to me but I have heard of it happening to other people and I wanted to share this so people would not do this to there birds. Well If you ever bring your bird outside in its bird cage don't for get about him. If you leave him outside at dark it can freeze to death. My of my best friend had her bird outside to get fresh air and then the telephone rang and she went in side. she got side tracked and forgot about her wonderful bird. She remembered it the next morning. :rip: She put it in a hospital cage and on the way to the vet the bird passed away. The poor bird froze. My friend never got over it.

 

Another thing that can happened is in spring when it is warming up some people leave there windows open to cool off there room and they don't notice how cold it is getting. they also can freeze their bird. It is something that should not happen but it does.

 

I really hope this dose not happen to anyone. Please take my advice and don't freeze your bird.

Sorry but I don't know if a warm draft is okay. I am guessing it is but you would have to put it on the board to know for sure. When I think about it I think that if the draft is supper hot you should keep your bird out of it. I think it is common since.

What can get a bird sick and a quick decrease in warm or cold as Booms said if it is warm day and there is a warm draft that is okay but if it was cold then all of a sudden it was very warm I would wait until the house is warm inside and keep the bird out of the draft. I believe this is why Pretty 1 of the reasons why he died so suddenly. It was very cool then all of a sudden it became warm and I opened the windows on the nice day and then the tempature went down again. Their respiratory tracts are so senstive and when he was examed he was diagnosed with a respiratory issue the day of his passing. Can I prove it no but in humans we talk about getting chilled or the weather going up and down and kids getting sick so this is where my theory comes from.

it went from 40 to 75 back down to like 40 (f) like in 3 days. it was also very damp where you feel cold but it is not cold if that makes sense.

 

I know your birds if I remember hath played in the snow so I think believe a constant tempature is not the issue but the up and downs.

 

In all reality it is a theory who know he most likey was sick before that (which he probably was and I didn't know ) and the weather change just didn't help the issue at all. He went through a pretty nasty molt the month before, his immune system was just not up to par. Unlike Merlin who has been fine this experience has given me in sight about how I feel from pet to exhibition budgies (which Merlin is 1/2)

when i add birds to the aviary that have been in the house in quarantine, i wait until night time temps dont get any lower than the high 50s, and also no daytime temps above 90 or the heat will kill them too. They really do need to be aclimated to the outside when coming from the house.

i agree with this as well but i still dont think 4.4 was cold enough on its own to kill the bird i wait till their is no more frost when young and breeding pairs are put out into outside flights

I remember back a few years when I had my budgie Guess. I left her outside one winters day cause it was lovely in the sun. However I forgot about her, then remembered it was about 8pm when I did. I rushed out and brang her in and unhappy is not the word to describe her she was so mad at me. Used to look at the wall when I came into feed her and talk to her took a full week for her to forgive me.

Needless to say I never did that again.

I miss her she was quite a character she in birdie heaven die about a year ago now. Memories

All of my birds love going outside on a warm day (not in direct sunlight), and get their Vitamin D. They have a great time, screaming/singing away and enjoy the change of scenery and fresh air. All under supervision of course as one never knows when a small hawk, crow or cat might come around.

Our Budgie is kept indoors and the ducted heating is on during the day, but at night time we turn it down. I assume this wont cause any problems?? Do I need to put a blanket over his cage or anything? So at night time the temperature drops down to around 15 degree Celsius (59 degree Fahrenheit).

I used to have my birds outside day and night. I had to take them in recently cause it was WAY too hot. I keep 'em out in spring but not summer. It gets WAY to hot here. (115 F, at the most)

Indoors that sort of temperature difference should not cause any problems. A night time cage cover is a good idea regardless to stop any drafts and provide a dark and secure environment for sleeping. It doesn't have to be a blanket thou. I've used all sorts of fabric from cotton to old tea towels and occasionally lightweight bath towels (handy in emergencies).

my budgies live outside in an aviary all year round.... i've yet to have one offically die from severe heat or severe cold... in winter they huddle up in the covered aviary and in summer they're sprayed several times a day aswell as the aviary being sprayed to cool off... any deaths i've had there has been a visual other cause... but people in glass houses shouldn't throw stones so i'll touch wood on that one
