Show Budgie Auction

Recommended Posts

Yesterday Feathers and I went to a Show Budgie auction. It was a first time for me to an auction of that type. There was 111 birds for sale by auction from some of the states top breeders and sponsored by one of our local Budgie Clubs. They ended up going from $20 to $300 plus dollars. Something for everyone.

I bought some and Feathers bought some. I will do some photos later ( rainy and dull day here today ). My 8 birds are in quarantine, but I will record their details and photograph later in show cages. I have decided to try and specialise in Recessive pieds in the Show type budgie size, which is much larger than those we are used to on here. I will also try with greywings, and I have a soft spot for yellowface blues as well. I got some good birds. It was a good, if long day out. :(

Here are some of the new birds. A couple of them were young and refused to perch in the show cage preferring to attempt to "jailbreak"

Norm Wheatley I would guess. Kaz's birds came from Posthuma, Kobilanski, Hugo and Mitchell & Torricella.

The top bird of the day went for $350. It was a very nice double factor spangle hen. Another from the same breeder was passed in when it failed to reach the reserve price of $300.00.

I came home with 3 new birds, a really nice grey cock, split for greywing. I also ended up with 2 birds that failed to meet the minimum reserve price of $30.00. On second offer I ended up with both birds for a total of $51.00. They are medium quality Black Eyed Self's. Both originally from NSW. As there is really only one breeder in WA that is working with this mutation I have decided to take them on as a specialty breed. It will take a few years to get the standard up, but that is a challenge in itself.

Here are the birds I bought:

I also won one of the raffles that was being run on the day. It was a hospital cage. It has a built in heat lamp and thermometer.

It was an interesting day.

Yes, I was so pleased for Feathers winning the hospital cage...I just knew she was going to somehow. Just what she needs with starting up breeding...an emergency warm cage.

YES...I have decided to specialise in recessives mostly. Any genetic advice willingly taken. Notice the guys I got have very long "masks"....they are nice boys...especially BEAR...he is a very gentle soul...hence his name Bear ( after Teddy Bear ). Shuzzbut is a fruitloop and Major just wont keep still. They need show cage training for sure. The grey greywing will be paired up with Ferris later on maybe or a grey hen I also got at the auction. She wouldnt stay still for photos....I call her FIDGET. :(

Well I can't give you advice on how to improve the line with size, spots, but I can work out the mutation portion. I do know Daz wrote up a good one in the breeding section about recessives and I remember reading that their size is the biggest issue because they are usually a slighter bird :(.

Wow Kaz I'm in love with Fritz,he's so handsome but yet so cute and fluffy aswell.

He's a pretty boy and chunky too. Would not stay still in the showcage for photos...I had to take 40 or so just to get one I could use. Guess he got tired in the end. He is from the same breeder as Ferris my greywing girl or dilute ...the one that won at the last show. I will ask for details to see if they are related.

I like Fritz's SPOTS...they're so cute. :hap:

That is a problem with a lot of the rarer varieties and a major reason why not many people bother with them. They won't win "Grand Champion" - they simply don't have the size to be competitive in that division. But on the plus side for the people who do take them on, they stand a better chance of winning in their own class.

Paul... the auction itself ran for 4 hours. Prior to that there was 1 hour for lodging the birds and 1 hour for viewing. I guess there was about 50 - 60 people present.
