okay I am ready to give this a go.

I have researched, read, studied, asked questions, spoke with my vet and feel I am ready to start a few breeding pairs. I even have a mission statement!!! As with anything new, I am a bit nervous, but I am sure that will pass.

I have double and triple checked all my supplies, made a research notebook, downloaded the budgerigar program and set up the breeding cages. If my first experience isn't terrible ( praying for good results) I plan on joining the ABS and starting a SELECTIVE breeding program. There are no quality breeders in my area, so my plan is to provide quality and background to those looking for a non CHAIN PET STORE budgie. I am sure I will have tons of questions for you all, and I know this is the right forum to get them answered, so thanks in advance for any help along the way!!

Look forward to watching your journey and that is a great reason to breed improving the lines for others :).

There is excellent information about breeding in our FAQ's which are located at the time. I encourage you to read. We have wonderful members who breed on a small scale, to a larger scale for either pet or show budgies. So there is a vast knowledge on BBC so please always feel free to ask away.

Certainly nothing exciting, but here are the two pairs I have put up. The breeding cages from what I have read here are big enough. I have in them the following: Cuttle bone, calcium block (x2) mineral block (x2)food, water, millet, nest box. I am using a powder calcium supplement that I mix with their wet food. I can't seem to find calcivet here in the states. Their diet consists of (for all my birds, not just the breeders) 3 different fresh veggies and 1 fruit daily. Crumble and fortified seed. Every other day they get a protein source ie: egg or ground chicken. Vet has me giving them all liquid vitamin supplement and wheat germ oil mixed with seed as well.

Have I left anything out??? ANY and all suggestions or advice is solicited, so please add your thoughts. Thanks a bunch!!

Talk about FAST!!! One of my two pairs have been mating on and off for the last 30 minutes, The females cere is just the slightest shade of tan in the center just between her nostrils. She is coming into breed mode, my question is this. Is it to soon for her to produce fertile eggs? It looked to me like they were doing a pretty successful job of it, so there shouldn't be an issue there. I am just worried that she is not yet fully in season. Any thoughts?

I f you put two budgies together and the hen isnt in breeding condition, she will be in a few short days once she sees the nesting box. Its like a light going on. A hen can be brought into breeding condition by the right cockbird and the right set of conditions for baby making. You seem to have covered all your bases. Good luck. Eggs maybe in about 8 days.

Nice looking set up too :D Ask the vet about the calcivet he might be able to help. If you can't find it still add the egg shell with the mixture (when adding eggs) to help, crush it finely.

I think your going to get some great looking bus from these two pairs.
