the hen should be able to feed the chicks on her own no problem,i have had a **** die like this this year and the hen managed fine i personally wouldnt put food in the nest box apart from the millet which i introduce when the chicks are aprox 3 weeks old

What is the best book you have read regarding breeding of budgies
hope you dont mind me answering this but if you can get it the challenge breeding exhibition budgerigars by gerald s binks in my opinion is a must dont be put of by the title it is not just for show people but for pet owners who want to breed these little gems it covers everything

nlpmaster1974, I have a hard time finding books that deal specifically with breeding. I have two general budgie books that have sections on breeding but nothing that is only about breeding. They are "The Complete Book of Parakeet Care" and "The Parakeet Handbook". They are published by Barrons, and have the most recent publication dates. What I know, I know mostly from raising them in my living room, and watching over them like a mother hen. If you are looking for reading material, I would try to find the one hath recommends, as he knows a great deal more about it. :)

Thanks everyone for the help! Well I came into my room a moment agoand I heard some peeping sounds. I checked the nest box while the mother was gone and there was one bald pink baby! Its so tiny!! Its soooo cute! So I have one that hatched today. I'm going to have pictures by tomorrow!! :)

I gave the hen extra millet and tomorrow morning I want to pick up some veggies for her.

Over the last couple of days, all the eggs hatched! So now I've got three baby budgies. :) I still need to get pictures....I tried to take some but they didn't come out very well since it was dark in the nest box. I'll probably try again when they're about two weeks old. :parrot:

:(Laughing out loud): (Laughing out loud)...the mom is so funny.....she seems to trust me, but she's very very suspicious of me. When the frist egg hatched, she's been watching me from outside of the nestbox. She noticed that I always look at the babies when she's away. Now everytime she sees me approaching the cage, she runs back into the box and sits on her babies!

I still have no pictures!! I borrowed a camera so I'll see what I can get tomorrow.

Anyhow, two of the babies' eyes are open now. I want to handle them...do you all think now's an okay time? They're featherless still, but they're bigger and their cries are a lot more frequent. I think I should help the mom out a little with feedings when they get really big.

It's probably okay to handle them now. I waited until they were fully feathered (about three weeks) before I handled mine, but that was because Skittles is a nervous bird. It won't make any difference in how tame they will become if you handle them now or later. Just be prepared for at least one baby to act like you are going to eat him and start screaming at you. :P (That really freaks out the hen.) If she is going straight for the nest box when you go toward the cage, after that happens, she will go straight in there whenever she hears you coming towards the room! :P She may not even leave the box when you open it - just sit on the eggs/babies and scream at you - LOL.

(Laughing out loud)! She already does scream at me when she hears me from outside of the box!

I guess I'll wait some more. In other news one of the chicks died. It was the youngest one too. I wonder what went wrong. :( I knew that I had to take him out whether Sprite liked it or not and she got really freaked out when I tried to take the dead baby out. It was like she was going to have a heart attack. She kept lunging at my hands.

If the nest box seems dirtier than it normall should be, please let me know! I want to clean it, but I want to wait until the chicks are older so I don't stress the mom out.

And I also got pics of a few of my other budgies.

Hello everyone!

Back to the update, I don't remember if I posted this but another chick died. The mother stopped feeding him and again it was the younger one. So now I only have one chick who is left, he he is the oldest of the bunch. So far hes around 14 days old and hes coming out green like his mom. I think he may be a male too. I have some new pictures of Little Man, what I'm calling him for now.

So far I've been handling him everyday so he'll get more accustomed to me.

(Laughing out loud)! I brought him downstairs for my dad to see....he thought the little one was the ugliest thing he's ever seen! :(Laughing out loud): "No wonder they call them ugly ducklings!" he said. I still think that baby is the cutest thing ever!

I'm wondering if she stoped feeding them for the mere reason that there was not enough food in her crop for her and the babies. Since they got bigger and needed more and more food, maybe she decided to feed the oldest one most since he has the best chance of survival. Maybe she didn't have enough food in her body to feed both herself and the little ones. I figure she gives all the babies everything she had and the father just gives her more regurgitated food, but now without the father around its a lot harder for her. It seems to make sense to me, but this is my first time breeding birds.

(Laughing out loud) julie!!! they are gorgeous. it is funny seeing them like that now. mine are only 4 weeks old and they are like slightly mini versions of their parents. they are also getting right little attitudes. congrats birdyboo. it is a shame the way things have worked out but at least you have 1 healthy gorgeous looking baby. what are you intending to do, keep him or sell him.

Thanks for the comments everyone! Dozybeak, I am actually going to give this one to my brother. I know he'll take very good care of him since he had budgies before. He had one that talked and gave kisses...it was the cutest and he actually made kissing noises when you kissed him on his beak (Laughing out loud)! Other than that I would keep the babies. I could never just give/sell them away because I don't want any of the chicks going to bad homes.

That's the trouble for me-I don't breed but would love to but I would worry about good homes for the babies and probably end up keeping them all,be it budgioes or quails.
