oh wow Kaz, Ive just finished reading this post and think that you should be awarded the most patient Award, i would have gone stirr crazy waiting this long! I am extremly jealous though of your bird room and avairy, the floor plan looks amazing and the pics are even better! I have shown the floor plan to my other half and said that when they start building our place next year, that the bird room and flights are a must add, the builder will have a fit, but Im not concerned! We are building on 5 acres so I am sure that we can afford the space, half and acre of cage should be nothing :-) ssssshhhhhhhhhh told tell the other half I think that he will have a fit! I was originally thinking of something along the lines of a 5 car garage, in kit form they are cheap, its the fit out that is the killer!!!!!! Ive been told four car including flights and bird room! Now I just need to win lotto so that I can retire before I turn 30 and spend the next 40 years breeding birds!!

Sounds great  You need to plan and dream. The only thing that gets in the way at times is money and time to do it all. Takes way longer than you think in the end.

Wow Kaz I just read this entire thread from start to finish and your aviary is amazing! And I LOVED your old one!!! Congratulations it will look so fantastic once it's finished!

My plans have changed somewhat from the aviary plans I showed you ages ago, we ended up buying a small house with a smaller back yard that we still haven't moved into yet... It's kinda like your aviary but Scott is working on it weekends and after work. It turned out to be a complete rebuild and we stripped it right down to the frame and had to re-stump, it's only at lockup now. There is no chance an aviary will fit, will fit in the yard, so Scott is building me a patio aviary instead, it will be 1.5mtrs long by about 1 mtr deep and 2 mtrs high, with a separate access door on the side to prevent escapees! It will be on castors as well just so it's easy to clean around, and I can move them into a sunny spot on a nice day. As it is so cold in Ballarat do you think there will be any benefit in insulating to 2 solid walls and having a PVC drop sheet for the front, with eye holes fitted so it can be secured in place??

I will have to remember to come back and keep checking it out ;) Have you done the leadlighting for beside the doors yet??

Hey... nice to hear from you :D Your ideas for your aviary sound great! Especially as Ballarat is SO COLD!!! Your house sounds like it is coming along nicely too.

It makes life very much easier and the temperature in there is more constant. I have yet to install the polystyrene ceiling sheets...but may get to do that this weekend.

Opps sorry about my spelling, not with it today.

But gee Kaz have me thinking about fixing up my little breeding room.

Whet out and had a look !!!

I thought now if I tiled the floor it would look much brighter and then I was thinking I could insulate the walls and put panels on like yours. and the roof, which would make it much cooler in the summer.

Sounds good to me. BUT Greg will say NO waste of money.

Going to price the stuff tomorrow when I go to Shep shopping.

Got me thinking now???????????

just a query Kaz. They are the cages off ebay right? How do you attach the cage to the outside? did you cut away the frontsection of the cage where the nest box goes? and do you leave the nest boxes attached 100% of the time? okay so thats a few queries but just wondering.... :D

I am not Kaz, as you well know, but I can answer some of the questions you had.

There are multiple places where you can buy the cages from. Yes, there are some on me-bay. I bought similar cages from JJ Aviaries, who is located near Penrith in Sydney, but you can view his website if you do a search for JJ Aviaries.

If you mean attach the nest boxes, you can insert some screw hooks and it hangs on the outside. There is a large door on these cages, so you do not have to cut away any wire. This means that the nestboxes do nto need to remain attached 100% of the time.

I am sure Kaz will correct me if I am wrong.

thanks dave. I appreciate the info. I didn't think that they had the large door on them... but if they do that is great! And upon closer looking at the pictures, there is a door on the left hand side of the cage so you would think that there would be one on the right as well... Thanks Dave!

I took the front of the cage off and turned it upside down. The lower doors were then on the top...one drops down for access to nestbox...the other is clipped up top to keep it shut. Middle door I also reversed.

I have just bought a near new patio off ebay. It will be the main part of my new flights...roof and poles. Just have to divide it up and wall it in.

patio4.jpg

patio3.jpg

patio2.jpg

Size is 5 metres by nearly 6 metres. We will reduce it to 4 metres by the nearly 6 metres. 4 metres so it isnt too close to the fence.

I was originally going to do three flights each 4 metres by 2 metres wide. e6d409d4.jpgBut I have decided to do two flights 2 metres wide by 6 metres long going the opposite way instead. Giving the birds more flight room to build up wing and shoulder muscle.....also allow for crossflow breezes to cool in summer.

It has been dismantled and labelled for easy rebuilding. The seller is also going to deliver it for free delivery. We will have to buy two extra poles thats all.
