I'm just curious. He is a pet budgie, so he isn't buff or anything. But I'm curious how he would rank and what criticisms you have for him. Please contribute. I am very interested. :P

Note: I tried to get a good picture of him in a good pose, but the camera is playing up again and photobucket is going a bit mad. Anyway. thankyou. :P

This is a good one to see him face on: At the moment he has 3 neck spots on each side. :)

These are some old far away ones, but they give you an idea of his stance.

Thankyou very much. It'll give you judges some practise. ;) :budgiedance:

Yay! Photobucket, became sane again. Camera is still evil though. but I got some pictures of him in his pose. :)

He is also a bit fluffy due to fatherly duties.

He was a bit grumpy too, all he wanted to do was go and flirt, but mean mummy kept putting him back on the perch.

yeah, (cough) tell it like it is Hath :)

Hate to say, after only having been to one Budgie Club meeting and judged beginner birds once, I would have taken a quick look and then dismissed him  It really was an eye opener. Stunning bird though he is, he isn't a show bird.

I didn't expect him to be a showbird. I knew he wouldn't stack up. That's good though. I was really quite curious. Tee hee. Because I haven't been to a show before, I don't really know what they look like or how they are judged. I tried looking at some standards, but found it a bit hard to tell how they worked quite. I like to read how dogs are judged in show rings you see.

Does he have any good points? (Laughing out loud)

Hey, I said he was nice :)

The best thing would be to actually go along to a budgie club meeting, or a show if you can. Like I said, it was a real eye opener and from a glance across a hall you can see the difference, it is remarkable.

Don't worry you guys. I did ask to have him compared to a show bird. I was thinking more of the american ones but I didn't want anyone to be soft.

He is an american budgie, so they do have different standards to the english show budgies.

I was wondering. Does anyone ever show american budgies?

What is a hinge tail? His tail looked straight in all the pictures.

Sailorwolf here is a photo of a Show bird on the American Budgerigar Society Web Site.

bull-3-06.jpg

Strangely enough it's not a good representation of a good Show Bird.

Key hole head and missing one spot and lacking in shoulder :D

It has good frontal and blow though. Nice body colour.

But it must have been put there for a reason.

:) The debate regarding terminology to differentiate between budgerigar type has been moved to the General Questions about Budgies section If you are interested in that topic, please post replies there. This thread again only concerns Sailorwolf's budgie. Carry on. :) Edited by Rainbow

Sailor I think he is VERY cute .... he is the same colouring as my little one ... I have seen pics of show budgies and personally, I like the average budgie better, those show ones always have that boofy head thing happening ... Nothing wrong with a budgie whos a little rough around the edges with a Pin head and hinged tail and short mask :( (no disrespect Hath or Daz, just didnt know that those points were looked at for show Budgies):)

I have never seen an ugly budgie :) They are all beautiful. But when we evaluate for show standards we have bench marks to meet.

I don't think the french poodle with all the special cutting of the hair is attractive. Some people don't like the boofy heads on show birds. All to our own tastes. :)

Don't worry Hath and Daz. I didn't say or mean that you meant he was ugly, because you didn't.. Don't worry. You did what I asked. Nothing wrong. I appreciate your answers and I'm sorry I made some of you feel akward. :)

Thankyou very much for your replies. :hap:

The mask is the spots. In a show bird they should be further down the below the beak. Also, many times birds seem to sit with that hinged tail because they have trimmed wings. I don't know if it helps them balance a little better or what, but I've seen many pictures of birds that will sit like that trimmed and when their flights grow back in they carry more of a straight line from the back to the tail. Also if they are feeling a little under the weather they sometimes sit like that also. I'm not saying he is sick or anything, but something else to file away under "information"...He doesn't appear to have a hinged tail in all the photographs, so could be a transitory thing also. :)

He is lovely to me. :)

I thought the mask was (in his case) the white part of the face -- and the spots were called the necklace.. I could be wrong.

Mask is the face of a budgie. In this case the white part of his face. Different countries seem to have different terminology especially with show budgies. With regard to the hinged tail...it only appears in certain photos and not others so I would say he was just like that to balance in just certain moments, like when he was on the playgym. :)

Here is some show bird info about a birds head and mask....

quote.....

Head

Most winning birds should display good head quality. The skull structure is one of the most difficult areas to breed into an exhibition budgerigar. If we look at the width of face on the bird, it has to be in proportion to the height above the cere. Achieving a full backskull is a most challenging task. Too many birds lack backskull which is a most undesirable feature on the exhibition bird. How many winners do you see that excel in backskull? Mr and Mrs Newman's Grey-Green cock, which won the 1994 National was one, but many do not. The bird must also have a deep mask on which to carry large spots. A shallow mask is a major fault which must be avoided at all costs.

Hope this has been helpful

Thank you Bubbles, I didn't explain well, and was wrong to boot. I thought the mask was the face area from cheeks to right below spots but just said spots since show budgies have such large ones they take up much of that area. I didn't realize the spots weren't included. :ausb:
