Eat But Dont Drink ?

Recommended Posts

Guest bigyin

I got 2 budgies about a week ago. They appear to have settled okay. They chirp, they preen, they eat seed.... but I have yet to se them take any water from the 2 containers I have supplied. One is a cage front hopper type and the other is an open dish on the floor of the cage.

I'm getting a bit worried about this behaviour... what should I do ? Tomorrow I am going to get a fine spray and spray them with water.... that way they should get some at least.

It's very possible that they're drinking when you aren't around. I hardly see my budgies drink unless I'm in the room with them for an entire day, and even then, I often miss it.

Misting them is a good idea anyway, it's good for the feathers and promotes preening. :(

Hi bigyin and welcome :D

Budgie don't need a lot of water and so many don't see them drinking. If you give them any green (lettuce, sprouts etc ) they will get water from them.

But the spray is still a good idea.

Hi Bigyin, happy new year to you too. My daughter was the same as you, she didn't think her bird was drinking any water. She didn't check it for a while and one day I found it dry and we ended up with a sick bird with a respiritory illness. The antibiotics for which are dissolved in the water. Thankfully the bird recovered, she now knows how much they need their water!

Budgies come from very dry places i.e. the outback and because they are desert animals they don't really drink that much water. Especially when they are new, they will be a little scared to drink while in your presence.

I thought I'd cracked it when I got a couple of new dishes for the bottom of the cage, one for water and one for seed. They are ceramic dishes and next day i looked and the water dish was dry. Great I thought they must have drank it all and even had a bath becuase the bottom of the cage was wet. But turns out the dishes are not glazed and the water is seeping right through... doh !!

Since then I have seen them drinking so everything is fine now.
