Love your birds Bubbles, they're all so beautiful!

A quick pet-peeve of mine, though. It's wrong to think that a 'double-factor yellowface' causes a bird to be white. This isn't just wrong for budgerigars, this is a wrong concept. If two 'yellowface' genes cause a budgie to be blue, then a blue gene is what it is, not a yellowface gene. The appearance of a yellowface arises because budgies have two different types of blue genes, blue1 and blue2. When a budgie has both genes, then it will be a yellowface. For your example, one of your budgies is double factor blue1, the other is double factor blue2, all the offspring will be b1/b2 and a yellowface.

There are also the goldenface (gf) and yellowface (yf) genes, which are true yellowface genes and can be picked out by differing shades of yellow in budgies. Yellowface is actually the most complicated out of all the budgie genes.

The article to go to for the yellowface. :P

All of this sounds very interesting but at the moment a little above my head. Since a few of you genetics buffs have some great knowledge to share here, perhaps a separate topic on the genetics of yellow faces would be more easily found and there for all to share. I would appreciate learning more when the genetics buffs get together and show us there stuff :D

I went to a show breeding club's written auction yesterday. It's where show breeders bring their birds to a club meeting and it works like this.....at a written auction the person selling the bird has the first bid. It is written on a form attached to the cage then others write their bid until the bidding time is up.

The highest bid gets the bird , bidding is done over a couple of hours.

I went just to look, but if I had been more prepared with both time and money I could have got some brilliant show budgies for a fraction of normal prices paid. Still it was interesting and the budgie club that put it on is an excellent one. I will be joining that club as well as the one I am in, as a few people have dual memberships like that to get the best from their clubs.

Ken is down the back of the aviary, shovel in hand digging up the floor of the aviary ready for stage 3 of our aviary modifications. Stage 3 ( an area about 3 metres by 4 metres ) will become a "bird room" for breeding in breeder cabinets......for the show budgies. The floor is to be concrete slabs, and we will have lighting in there, water, and better roofing and ventilation. It's all go around here. :)

:) okay...so I bought ONE bird at yesterday's auction just with some change in my pocket. Apparently he has potential as his father is a Cec Gearing bird (lacewing) and the mother is a large headed light green normal. Others in the nest were a dark green ( olive ) brother and a lacewing sister.

So here he is DUNSTAN a331x.jpga324x.jpg

I named him Dunstan after a club member who has been a very good mentor to me.

a332x.jpg:) He is this years breeding so still a baby.
