An Extract from the Format and Rules for the Australian National Budgerigar Council Annual Championship Shows.

No Variation in the base colour of the year ring is acceptible.

Colour Sequence is:

2005 Purple

2006 Gold

2007 Green

2008 Black

2009 Red

2010 Blue

Now I don't know the colour before 2005 but i'll try to find out.

Here's something straight out of my lecture notes. :)

Determination of age by reading leg rings

For budgies

Format and rules for Australian Championship shows sets the colour of each season's ring over a 6 year cycle.

2000 gold

2001 green

2002 black

2003 red

2004 blue

2005 purple

2006 gold

NB imported birds' ring colours do not match with the above. Not all rings have hatch dates on them (eg plain coloured plastic ones).

The ring issue date is from 1st January each year.

The National Secretary notifies the ring manufacturer before September each year of the nominated symbol to be etched onto the ring. For example, the year 2001 may be displayed as 1# and 2002 as 2*. The reason for the symbol in lieu of the full year (it used to be that way, eg 1999 was 99 and 2000 was 00) is that it has been alleged that some fanciers were getting rings manufacted overseas in advance of the year, thus possibly having an advantage on the show bench.

Other markings - BCV = Budgerigar Council of Victoria

Other letters and numbers identify the individual breeder and the bird's identification number.

Yes that is correct about the symbols. I have some with triangles and some with dashes for different years.

Yeah I have a triangle one as well, can't remember which bird it was now. Just looked back and you have a red one like me dad so it might be Pie's ring. ( and Tootie but I don't see hers as well.)

Guest Thirtyfive Black

thats interesting.

my most recent bird is purple, but was from this year. i have yet to find a standard of rings in the US though. each breeder seems to use what every they want to according to their own records. it really makes things hard!

I'm not sure about the US, but we get our bands through our bird club. They in turn get the rings through the Avicultural Advancement Council of Canada. See here for the explanation - http://www.aacc.ca/rings.htm

The club does not hand them out until very late December so people can start banding in early January.

Our colours are:

1981 Red

1982 Blue

1983 Orange

1984 Black

1985 Yellow

1986 Green

1987 Purple

1988 Red

1989 Blue

1990 Orange

1991 Red

1992 Blue

1993 Silver

1994 Orange

1995 Purple

1996 Green

1997 Red

1998 Light Blue

1999 Silver

2000 Orange

2001 Purple

2002 Green

2003 Red

2004 - Blue (Dark with white letters)

2005 -Silver

2006 - Orange

2007 - Purple

2008 - Green (dark)
