Sweetpea has been spending more time in the nest box :hap:

not sure if they have bred yet as they usually stop whatever they are doing when I watch them, Sweetpeas cere is getting darker every day, and Boidies so proud, he shows her off to me, he loves hens.. :hap:

hopefully by the end of the month I will have eggs! :hap:

well I guess all hens are going to make first timer mistakes, I'm not sure how it happened but, there was alot of screeching going on so I went to see what was wrong and some how the egg made its way out of the nest box and onto the cage floor, unfortunatly theres about a 15 inch drop and the egg shell didn't make it, Boidie has experience and wouldn't do that, hopefully she learned from that.. whatever she did.

these are older pics, not the best..

well Sweetpea only laid one egg.. I've always been under the impression that a hens first clutch is usually her largest.. I felt her yesterday to make sure she didn't retain an egg, she's still acting normal so.. just one egg and she broke it..

I'm going to leave her in with Boidie and see if they try again.

we're up to 2 eggs here, 3rd is due tomorrow, she's keeping them warm and has desided that the concave in the bottom of the nest is a good spot to set instead of along the wall of the box.

doesn't sound like she is over rolling them and she lets me check them without too much worry, the only problem is I forgot to mark egg #1, so I dont know which is which :D

we're up to 3 eggs, I candled the first two so I could mark them properly and see if the real first egg was developing, it's got a little fetus inside and I watched his little heart beat for a few seconds :glare: , so I marked the egg and put it back so Sweetpea could get back on them.

I'm so happy, just hope she doesn't do anything wrong when they hatch. :glare:

up to 4, if she's going to have a 5th it'll be due tomorrow night, I'll know by tomorrow afternoon, she usually gets an "egg butt" very easy to tell when she's got an egg in her.

she's being a very good momma hen, she only takes a few minutes to break then she shoots right back in the box, the only time she stays out for any real amount of time is when I candle the eggs.

#2 is fertile, I'll check #3 tomorrow if I have another egg to mark. so far so good. :budgiedance:

one question for those who band, I'm considering getting some for this brood if they arrive on time do I have to register each band or will they automatically be registered?

the place I'd be getting them from says they are track-able which is what I prefer.

whoops and one more thing, does anyone have the 18 day calendar link, I can't find it and the one in the sticky doesn't work for me.

thanks

we've got one baby, s/he hatched early this AM, #2 has already cracked his egg so with any luck s/he'll be here tomorrow morning as well.

#1 seems very strong, I haven't found it on it's back yet, squeels whenever I touch it or move an egg, and they've been feeding it throught the day, Boidies such a proud father he spent the entire morning in the box with his little family.

one question, Nerwen I saw your post about the black dots on a chicks back and how opalines don't get them, at what age do the dots usually form?

thanks cosmo, #2 hatched late last night about 11PM EST, they've been feeding him real well.

number 1 chick had a bruise on his neck yesterday but thats already going away.

so far they both seem very strong and healthy, and they dont hesitate to voice their opinions when Sweetpea is rolling the eggs :)

I checked the eggs a few hours ago and #3 has cracked the egg.

I'm suprised at how fast they are coming into this world..

#1 hatched early morning on the 13th, #2 hatched late night on the 14th, #3 may just be here by morning, and #4 has already piped the air cell.

I think someone was a little too rough with #2 today as he had a scratch on his chest, appeared to have bled a little but seems okay now, but I'll certainly be watching him, anything I can put on him to keep from infection?

I just brought #4 into the world, I went to make sure the other 3 were being fed and there he was almost completely out of his shell, all I had to do was lift the top peice and out he came :budgiedance:

going by what nerwen said about the dots, #1 is male and I am leaning toward female with #2 as she hasn't gotten any black dots as of yet, she will be a week old on the 21st. ;)

I'm wanting to keep a female from thie pairing so #2 may just be staying with me.

I'm open for names for the first two if anyone's got suggestions, when I know exactly what mutations they are I will post, pics will have to wait as I dont have a digital camera.

aww that sounds great Dingo :)

I'm not sure what you could use to help with infection in the bub. Maybe a light wash in lukewarm water?? ( as in get a cotton ball and brush it over the scab once or twice for a few days)

It's nice when you have a male with a sex-link trait makes it easy to pick the genders.

they're all being fed so far, the scratch that #2 had on her has healed and is gone now, and the bruise on #1 has completely gone away as well and his eyes have opened!

feathers are starting to become quite visable on the older chicks, #1 my apparent only male from the clutch, might be pied, he has a bare bar across the back of his head(no dots), but the wings haven't feathered yet so I can't say for sure, #2 the little hen is looking like she might be a white bird.. I see no color at all in the pins just white, she's not albino since her eyes are not red, the other 2 are still to young to say for sure but it's looking like #3 is also a hen.
