Hi there

i wonder if someone can help me. One of my budgies - clio goes up to the top of the cage and rubs her self up and down the bars - humping it. i know it sounds silly but she rubs her self up and down the bars. Its not all the time. She never bothers with that area any other time to be an itch.

can someone help as i cant find it anywhere else.

Jen

well to say it nicely she is mating with the cage bars

is her cere a very dark brown and crusty looking? if so she is in breeding condition and doing what comes natural.

Now this is in no means a reason to breed her if you are not looking too. She will stop once she comes out of breeding condition.

Other ways you can deter the behavior.

put a toy there to block that area

make sure your budgies are getting at least 12 hours of dark time

over flowing bowls of food should not be

if you have them near a constant running water supply - fish tank etc...

when their needs are met they have the desire to do what comes natural.

hope this helps out a bit, I am sure others will come along with more advice too

I'm not the right person to give advice on this topic as my boy Blink is the h**niest little budgie in existence. No matter how i arrange his cage he always humps his rope perch. If the rope perch is absent then he humps the cholla perch. I just let him do his thing now. I would hate for him to get so frustrated that he humps me. :(Laughing out loud):

My first budige, Pip, used to hump tennis balls in his youth!! He had a liking for anything yellow for some reason, and the tennis ball, and some smaller practise plastic golf balls my dad had both used to see a fair bit of action! So far my new boy Smudge hasn't displayed any humping tendencies, he's just been chatting up his cuttlefish bone. Boys, huh?

Usually I'd advise that the object of um...affection... be removed but obviously that won't work here. Try rearranging the entire cage, 12 hours darkness just like lovey said. A crusty brown cere may or may not be present though, some birds just get into this habit. I've decided not to elaborate on that point... :bluebudgie:

Does she have plenty of toys, different perches, etc.? Is her cage pretty spacious?

Hi

:grbud:

I have tried the darkness thing but with no luck. She gets space and all those other things, most of my other budgies have a mate. she doesnt.

please help.

never seen that kind of behaviour in my budgies! what have you been feeding them :P (Laughing out loud)!

the only thing i can suggest is to keep rearranging the cage to try and prevent her becoming aggressive with it.

I have a female yellow budgie that has the humping habit as well. My Penelope has one of those little wind up hopping chicks that is fuzzy yellow. When it is on the top of her cage, she will knock the chick over on its side, wedge it’s feet and the wind up knob between the bars. She then stands on top of it wagging away with her tail, pecking its eyes and beak the whole time chirping. When she gets close to climax, she spreads her wings over the little chick, chirps and wags faster then shouts when she reaches it. She has even tipped over on her back before and never missed a lick! My other female, Jo, budgie has NEVER humped and attacks Penelope when she starts wagging and tries to block her from getting to her humping toy. They beak fight bad when they do this.
