Remember the story of Amara who went missing and then was found ?? Re this posting....

*******AMAZING NEWS !!********** Amara has turned up. The bird that we thought had escaped. She was seen tonight at feeding time on the floor of the aviary being budgie bonked by her partner. I watched her and she went to the brushwood fencing attached to the inside wall of the aviary and shot over the top and down between the wall and the brush fencing. She has eggs and / or babies down there. Cannot get to her .....would have to dig her out and risk any eggs and or babies......so we shall have to wait and see. I am so pleased we havent lost her. By the way, she isnt the first one to think having babies in a strange place is a good idea......3rd time in this aviary. :( I am so happy we still have AMARA :(:(:( This is Amara as a little one aviaries2019x.jpg and her partner Merlin also taken when a little budgie budgiesjan100.jpg

Well the latest update is....we have found Amaras exact location today. She is down the bottom of a brushfence that lines the wall of the aviary. The gap she has chosen to raise babies in is about 3 inches wide and she is nesting in the soil at the bottom . We shone a torch down there and took some photos. The gap isn't wide enough or accessible enough for proper photos but maybe you can make her out at the very bottom, protecting her eggs and babies. Ken counted 3 babies and six eggs. Whether or not all eggs are fertile or some of the eggs are discarded shells is too hard to say. We will only see the babies when they are old enough to climb up the brushwood and make an appearance out of their hiding place. Dad Shimmies down the gap to get to her and feed her and babies too. She rarely comes out but has been seen once or twice.

Here she is at the bottom of the fencing....amara-2.jpg

she is in this area approx 8 inches to the right of the post behind the fencing JULY303.jpgJULY302.jpg

Yes. It's either complete removal of the brushwood or just cut away the bottom ten inches or so.....after she has finished raising her babies. :(

Are they at risk for snakes or other predators down there? I hope they all make it. Can't wait to hear about the emergence of the little bubs. Bet they'll be pretty!

No snakes in the aviary. Mice maybe on occasion but she would give them a run for their money :(

If mice come, I am sure this fiesty one will sort them out. She's a tough one. Overcame a bad infection once to triumph thanks to the dilligent care of her partner Merlin. She has chosen a spot sheltered from rain and damp. Maybe thats why so many eggs....she has felt safe. :hap:

Amara's parent are Bonnie (cobalt) and Clyde (sky violet) and these parents to Amara carry the recessive gene as they have had recessive pied babies......does that help ? One of Amaras siblings was recessive pied. Another from different clutch was recessive pied.

so then we will see if she got the gene 50% chance as I see it maybe maybe not :( Her blue looks like someone took a paint brush of white and blue and just stroked down with the brush, does it still look like that since she is older and molted out? How old is she?
