Karen, you are right we as humans try to act like God at time (not that you were) but nature has it course as you say. When breeding a good line of budgies you will always have losses. The strong survive right and the weak die. The strong survive to continue on a stronger line. That is our hopes. We have messed alot with the breeding in all different types of pets/animals for the pure sense of beauty. When really all living creature born is a miracle in itself.

Yasmin is gorgeous can she be my cyber budgie :) because I LOVE her. My first will always be my little Bubbles.

Lessons are being learnt. I try to keep the babies alive because I feel they need a chance. The parents reject because they sense something isn't right. I cannot "not try" as I am a "softie" at heart. But, in saying this, I have learnt that on occasion I must euthenase a bird and without my veterinary training I would not be able to do this. I try to give a bird every conceivable chance at life. I still cannot euthenase a fully feathered bird, baby or adult and leave that to experts. But I cannot see an animal suffer to it's end, so on occasion my veterinary training kicks in and I do what must be done. I hope I haven't offended anyone here by stating the cold hard facts. I adore my birds and give them my all.

On another subject, I have some lovely photos to post shortly taken in the aviaries earlier on this evening as I was feeding the "hungry hoardes".... :)

Your right, I would to the same I always have to try my best then it is left in God's hands. From getting to know you on these forums and even through e-mail I believe that you would do the best for your budgies that is within humanly possible.

Now for those pics :) (By the way did you see the picture of Merlin bathing? I thought it was cute cute)

hugs Karen :)

Thanks Lovey. Despite my best efforts to handfeed this one and keep it alive, it failed to thrive. I am beginning to believe that budgies know best at times. The ones they consistently push away and decide not to feed any more generally have something wrong we dont instantly recognise. In saying this.....its feet and legs were fine. It did have a crop and digestion problem however. I tried and failed :)

You did not fail. You offered assistance and love and that is never failure regardless of the outcome. Let your sweet heart rest assured that you gave this baby the best chance. Thank you for being so vigilant and caring.

:) I missed a picture of Merlin bathing ! Where is it ?! The stoic, reserved Merlin in all his glory, bathing ? Where, where where ? :o

Yasmin should be around 3 months..........yes to the cere question. I find my babies mature more quickly in an aviary situation. Some "tarts" want to start breeding at 12 weeks and have been caught doing so..... :)

but I dont let them. Jail for those perpetrators

Violets.....I have about 7 and some different kinds, spangles, opalines, normals etc. I LOVE violets :o

Pictures of the "boys" tomorrow. They will temporarily house in the patio aviary together for quarantine. Pancho and Sisco are mostly tamed as they have been handled from birth and gentle is the nature of these birds.

Frank is in my old aviary now....he was removed from his nest when the canaries were trying to take the nest and he was being stubborn. The canaries won :( In my old aviary (the big one) he has lots of ground cover to hide under but he likes to drape himself over the palm trees most of the time. Thats where I found him today. He is getting bigger too. No girlfriends....no other frogs. I suppose we could find him a friend, but how do you tell girl frogs from boy frogs :)

it's like telling dogs apart there you know what i mean

the female frogs are always bigger so that the male can stay on her back when mating

i would know i had 63 they all died in a fire accident

The sun is out and Frank the frog is hiding for now. I will try and do what you say when I see him next, but I have handled him before..... and he is very slippery and slimy and I dont think I will manage to get a tape measure over him :glare:

I have moved the last of the breeding budgies from my large aviary into a patio cage. We have Sonny and Kaya and their four babies in together and one other youngster with a disability. So the large aviary my budgies used to be in is now empty and ready for modifications for Kens Princess Parrots to go in soon as they are out of quarantine.

Amongst the budgies in 13 breeder cages, I have put big hen Macey Grey ( dilute grey spangle ) with Clyde

( sky violet normal ) and they have two eggs already.

Clyde xxx580.jpg

Jazz and Bono have two babies.......one a double factor white spangle, the other looks like Mum.

Baby two xxx570.jpgxxx572.jpg I think I have 2 females here

Tiki and Mazza have two babies hatched out but one is an adopt an egg from Jade and Goliath (largest baby to the right is Jade and Goliaths) xxx564.jpg

On another topic....Jazz ( dilute grey opaline spangle )and Bono...( sky opaline spangle pied ) have stopped feeding their babies. I found the two babies (grey dilute and a DF spangle white) weak, dehydrated and undernourished. Parents are in and out of the nest but ignoring babies. I have hand fed them and put them into the patio cage where Kaya and Sonny are with their newly fledged babies. They are in a container on the floor of the avairy and so far the other young babies in there have been in with them preening them and looking after them. I am watching closley and hoping that Kaya and Sonny may just take them on as regards to feeding them. If not I will continue to feed them as well. Here's hoping as I have had very little luck bringing sick babies back from the brink with handfeeding. I usually get to them too late and it doesn't work.

Change of subject..............

I called into two petshops today...just browsing. But I guess I am starting to be an advocate for the budgies any time that I see them in a petshop in "wrong" conditions. I'm afraid I try to educate the staff and make the birds conditions better for them wherever I can. Todays petshop had some pretty cinnamon dominant pied budgies amongst others. They were advertised as babies but were at least five months old, breeding condition females mostly. There was no seed dish in sight. They had a dish with GRIT and a dish with dry egg and biscuit in it.

I asked the shop assistant (who seemed to be the manager as she was older ) why there was no seed in the cage for the birds. She replied that as they were babies, they didnt need seed, just egg and biscuit. I informed her that these budgies weren't babies and that they did indeed need seed regardless of babies or not, and fresh vegies (but we won't go into the vegie debate here and now). She said how do YOU know they are not babies ? I educated her right there and then. I also told her she didn't need to put grit in their cage either as it was meant for birds that didn't husk their seeds. She was amazed by what I was telling her. She siad "how do you know all this ? " and I told her I had many budgies and learnt it all with help. She said she didn't know much about budgies at which point I told her....since she had books in the shop on budgies, she should do some reading. It would help the birds and herself. There was more, but I keep trying when I see things could be better for the birds. A petshop last night needed more perches and something for the budgie to do. The only budgie seemed "stir crazy" ............my suggestions for toys to help 1. sell the budgie by people watching its antics and 2. to help sell the toys to the people who buy birds...........were listened to but I have no high hopes. I have said the same in this petshop before. You only ever get to speak to the "underlings" that get paid to watch the shop....never the "powers that be".........

:)

I have made changes at last to one petshop at least.....as it turns out these people are neighbours and have befriended us. I have made suggestions re the budgie enclosure at this petshop and they have been implemented. Very good petshop and with plans to get better too with newfound knowledge and ambitions from new owners. The budgies have toys and ladders. Since the toys went in and the budgie enclosure got better the budgies are selling faster. With each batch of budgies the toys are removed and a new set put in with the new budgies. The toys and perches while they are in there are cleaned on a daily basis. Equals happy budgies. My educational budgie owner flyers will be handouts for the new budgie owners. :)
