    New Aviary

2 pairs are doing really well, 5 chicks each. 1st is almost about to flee the nest. Trying a round two with two other pairs, one hen didnt feed her chicks, and the other were mostly clear, and the two that werent clear, didnt hatch. So we'll see how we go with those two pairs on the second round.

I've added a couple of shelves and stuff in the bird room. Planning a few changes after visiting some other aviaries, and adding in the rest of the breeding cabinets.

Got the sink in the bird room, and water on. I've also had my first couple laying, 4 eggs so far and at least two are fertile.

    New Aviary

The flights are now finished, though I've only decked one out with perches so far, I'll do the other this week then split the hens from the cocks. I've got by nest boxes finished off also, I just need to build my last 3 cabinets, and a nursery cage. Other than that, just need to put in the water and sink, put the handrail on the deck, and paint it all. Pics below.

Hey Ange. Yes, the flights are steel frame, that way the birds won't chew it, and weather won't rot it, since for weather proof timber it needs to be treated, and treated is bad for the birds. As for the breeding cages, you can check those out at us link, http://forums.budgiebreeders.asn.au/index.php?showtopic=32704

Thanks guys. So I'm still plugging away. Got the roof on, and just today, got the deck on the side. Check out the picks. Also, sorry I still havent posted on how to make the seed hoppers, I will get there. Cheers.
  10. I bought a 4 litre tub of black seal, I should've bought a 1 litre, I've barely used any.

    New Aviary

As I hoped, I got a bit more done this weekend. Yesterday I got the brickwork finished, worked until sunset, but got it done. Today I only planned to get the piers core filled with concrete, but got quite a lot more done, I got the roof structure done! I'm very excited now to have the roof close to being done. Here's the pics...

Each council differs in laws and regulations, so best check your individual council. It will be bagged and painted, to match the house. It hasn't really cost me that much, since I haven't paid for any of the bricks or steel that has gone into it, just had to pay for the cement, gravel and sand so far. It's probably a little over the top, but I tend to do things that way, lol. The original idea was, that one day, when we sell the house, I will be able to strip the flights off the front ver easily, slip a sliding door in the front, and its automatically a workshop or storeroom, or even a bedroom for that matter. So it is very over engineered as a bird aviary, simply for that reason. But in the end, anyone can draw from this, but does not have to go with the whole brick base slab and brick walls, simply fibro walls or timber or iron would work just as well. The last time I built this design of aviary, it was timber stud walls with fibro (fc sheeting) cladding on the outside.
  13. Hey Jamie, so sorry for the late reply, I havent been on in ages. Each individual cage is 600 wide, 550 high, and 375 deep. the width allows a little fly space, and as I'm going to be mounting the breeding boxes on the outside, not a lot of depth was required. I pretty much found the cage fronts I wanted and then built the cage to that size.

I know a good brickie A'SHAAR hehe And thanks everyone else for tagging along for the ride, I'm excited to get it finished, but I have to split my time between this and a big cubby house/fort I'm building for my kids too, lol. I don't do anything by halves. Pebble, thanks for the nice comment, I love being inspirational, which is one of the reasons I made this thread, so others can draw ideas from it. I looked around on the net before I started this, for ideas of aviary and bird room designs, and I was very disappointed in the lack of content I found. This is why I posted this thread. So if it helps anyone, even if just with one of my little ideas, then thats good enough for me.

Budgie Lover, I can post up instructions, just give me some time, as I have a lot on right now, but feel free to remind me if I forget in the next week or so. So, the last two days have been the last two days of my holidays, and got a bit done... Mainly concentrating on getting the brickwork done right now, but my wife reminded me before I began, that the trees needed to come down, so we did that too, which you'll notice in the pics.. Day 1: Day 2: It's starting to take shape, I hope to get some more done on the weekend.

    New Aviary

Hi folks. Clearly its been quite some time since I added anything here. Unfortunately progress was quite slow for some time, but recently I've managed to get a bit done, and now the slab is done. It is now ready for brickwork, I have a sink ready for the bird room, and some connections on the nearby water tap, ready to run water into it. Also, while I was not able to get outside to work on it today, due to stuff to do most of the day, I did get in the garage this afternoon for a couple of hours to make some feed hoppers for the aviaries. I built these from memory, my Dad made these when I was a kid, and I think I did pretty well from memory. Photos below. And the feed hopper... Will keep you updated with the progress when it happens.

    New Aviary

I haven't posted in a little while, but I have been busy. I have the aviary almost to slab stage. Because the ground is so out of level, I had to do a brick base for the slab, so I poured the footings, did the base, and Ive put in the pipes for drains. Now I just need to fill it with dirt, before I can put in the steel and box it up to pour the slab. Might take me a few weeks to get that done yet, as I started a new job and Ill be working every second weekend. Anyway, check out the pics below.
  18. A couple more pics. I finished the 3rd triple bay cages. Just need to make a stand for under them, and the nest boxes now. I will be either making another 1 bay or 2 bays of cages to go next to this one, to give a total of either 12 or 15 cages, but it depends on the space left when the bird room is built.

Phoebes, I used chipboard and craft wood last time I bred budgies about 15yrs ago, and they were fine. All board has glue in them, ply as well, though granted, not as much as chipboard and craft wood (mdf).
  20. Hi guys. I actually posted these in my topic on the building of my aviary, but though I should post here too, to get it in the right department. While the weather has been terrible, and Ive not been able to work on the aviary, I have been working in the garage on my breeding cages. So I just thought I'd post up what I have done, in case anyone may like to use an idea I had in the building of mine, share ideas and all that. So this is what I posted in the other thread: Since the other day I have done a bit more work. Once the first one is together, the next ones tend to go together a whole lot quicker.
  21. Oh I see. I have the luxury of just building my cages now, so built around the front sizes.

    New Aviary

Thanks guys. Unfortunately the bad weather in Brisbane has held up progress a little, and I had to sidetrack to another job of adding in some drainage around the yard, cos it's always a mud pit. The plus side of this was, though, that I got to put in the drainage pipe for the aviary at the same time. So, some progress shots, though not much so far... First one here is the picture of the site for the aviary: The trees will be cut down. Second is a progress shot, clearing the area, including the fence: Next one is a pick of the drains going in: And another of the start of the footings: These still need to be dug wider and deeper, but its currently too wet. So while the weather has been ordinary, I have been also working in the garage, starting my breeding cages: I've been making these out of left over materials I got from work, so I've pretty much just made the sizes work by joining things together where I would normally have run a sheet of board right through. Also, because I'm on a pretty tight budget, here is a picture of how I have done the trays for the bottom of the breeding cages: Because I can't afford sheet metal to do metal trays, I have done it with chipboard, with an edging, and bought a tub of waterproofing (black seal), which is rated for potable water. Heaps cheaper, and should work okay. All in all, I'm getting there. I'll keep working on the breeding cages while the weather is bad. Next on the list for outside is to dig the footings wider, put the steel in and pour the footings. Once they are done, I will do a brick base, which will be filled with dirt, then plastic, then steel, to take the slab. The idea of doing a brick base instead of boxing it, is simply due to the very uneven ground in the position I chose.
  23. I just bought exactly those fronts you've pictured on eBay for $11ea.

Here is a floor plan of what I have planned. I will run power to the bird room for a power outlet and lighting. How important is night lighting for the birds? I will also have a floor drain in each of the flight areas as well as the bird room, and Im thinking a sink with running water, but that depends on space. At the very least I will have a tap with another drain beneath it. Robyn, thank you for your interest I plan on trying to buy some nice birds to start off with. I have only every done pet grade with my Dad when I was younger, but I wouldnt mind trying to get into more of a show range now. Perhaps I will even do both. Of course any comments are welcome on the design. Anything that will help me improve it would be fantastic. What would you have in your perfect aviary or bird room?
