  1. Budgie was euthanized yesterday. We took her the vet after we noticed there was a lump growing where her beak had broken.
  2. One of my older girls has had her beak fall/break off. 5-6 weeks ago she had bleeding the top of her beak so I took her to the vet, they cleaned her up and said she'd broken her beak. They glued it back together and said she would be fine and to just keep her away from the others, so she in our Nursery cage. We noticed this morning her beak is gone, the broken bit was on the bottom of the cage. Haven’t been able to take a photo yet, but the tounge is visible and it looks like the top beak is completely gone. Will it grow back? or do we need to euthanize her?
  3. Update: after losing about 90% of her feathers they have grown back She's still having issues flying but otherwise she's looking good
  4. Peroxide and a stint in the sun can get stains out of white plastic.
  5. Hi, we finally got to the vet today, the vet thinks she may have Beak & Feather disease, but the test is $260 and the vet said there would be nothing they could do for her, She said apart from the lost of feathers she is in really good health for her age, she has a small tumor under her tail bit that that isn't causing any issues. Vet said to pop her back in the aviary and see how she goes they didn't think there would be any issues..
  6. Hi All Just wonder if you can tell me what sex our babies are? Thanks
  7. Thanks, I'll give catching her a try as soon as we can and take her off to the vet, I don't think the featherloss is from being picked on, She actually got a pair of "protectors" who look after her. One of them even feeds her from time to time.
  8. Hi All, Wondering if I can get your opinons on my Old girl we've had her for 6 years and she wasn't a baby when we got her, she started looking a little tired the last few weeks, and I've been busy with work and the new batch of Chicks that Ive not kept as close an eye on her as I normally would. This is a photo I've just taken, she going bald (for lack of a better word) she's got a few patchs of feathers missing all over her body; and her beak has started to grow longer. She's still happy flying around the Aviary, she's actually a bit hard to catch, so I don't want to tramitiser her and catch her unless I have too. She's still eating and drinking and hubbie says she still first to the bottom of the aviry for lettuce/greens. What do you think? do I need to catch her and take her to the vet? I don't really want to have to move her to the Small Cage unless its 100% nesseary. Thanks
  9. We have another chick only a few days old, we're waiting to see if any of the other 5 eggs hatch Chick looks good so Mum's doing a good job so far
  10. Moe's going in the Aviary with everyone else, Mum is in the nesting box with 5 eggs now, she's been in there for the last 2 weeks, Dad's doing a great job of looking after both Mum and Moe
  11. He's Blue, here are some photo's of him today, he's a cute little guy, Hubbie has named him Moe
  12. Hi All He's doing really well, the cut is fully healed, We Checked Mum & Dad over when we moved them and Mum had broken egg stuck on her that had sharp edges so I think that was the cause of the cut. Here is a couple of photo's of our little guy, Not sure what colour he's (She's?) going to be, Mum is Black/Grey & White Pied & Dad's just a normal Blue.
  13. Good News we moved them again this morning Patch (hen) was back in the bowl with the baby within 10 minutes All three seem happy now One small issue is the chick has a cut on his head, it happened during the day yesterday, he was fine when i checked him in the morning but went i got home and checked him it was there, it looks like it is healing okay, do i need to put anything on it???
  14. Yeah the egg was dead, when we added the cardboard to the bottom of the bowl this morning I checked the egg, it was cracked open and hard on the inside. She's been okay with the cardboard in the bottom and the little guy is going good, his eyes are starting to open, We'll move them again on Saturday morning and see how they go I think we left it too late in the day when we moved them the first time. The other her is just curious I think she's never see a Chick, besides when she was one. She's my oldest girl had her for maybe 5 years now.
  15. We left them for about 4 hours it was starting to get cold so we didn't want to leave him without warmth. We added seed to the bowl this morning, tomorrow morning we're going to put cardboard in the bottom with seed on top, if she's okay with that we'll try moving them on Saturday morning, then I'll be able to keep and eye on them all day.
  16. Moving didn't work, we put the wood in the bottom of the bowl & moved everyone to the other cage, and she wouldn't go back in the bowl she totally ignored the poor chick, we ended up moving them all back. Once they where back she was right in there... We'll have to try something else...
  17. Thanks Everyone Hubbie is going to use his woodworking skills to make a concave wood base to fit into the bowl tomorrow once he's done we'll move Mum & Dad and the chick into the other cage, I'll take the chance while doing move to weigh the little guy and have a good look at him and snap some photo's too. Fingers crossed Mum will be okay with the Move, she's been in the cage before so its not a new environment for her. I'll let you know how we go tomorrow. Thanks again for the advice.
  18. Our hen who we tried everything we could to stop her laying has finally won and managed to lay & hatch an egg. Some history, we tried everything to stop her, we took her out of the Aviary for 6 weeks before returning her to the Aviary, she would lay off the perches and smash the eggs, she laid in the feeders and we changed them around until we ran out of options. We finally decided to give in and we set up a cage we could pop her and her Cock into so they could breed without a worry. Today we where going to move them, but when we went to the aviary to check them this morning we could hear chirping from one of the feed bowls she's taken up residents in. Finally worked up the courage to have a look this afternoon and she's got a healthy looking chick, just started to grow Down, so it hatched during the week sometime. Should mention that we knew she had eggs in there and we'd not taken this round out since every time we took to eggs out and refilled the seed bowl she would empty it and lay more eggs, we thought if we just let her keep them until we could move her it would help settle her down..none of her other eggs have ever hatched, and when I checked it last weekend she had about 10 eggs in there. There is still two eggs left in the bowl one looks like it might hatch soon, has dark shadows inside, and the other is a Cream colour (so not fertile, right? that's what all her other eggs looked like) I'm a bit worried about what to do now, we never intended to Colony breed, and tried everything to stop this Hen but she was determined to breed. One of our other Hens is keen to see the chick she's over there looking as soon as Mum pops out of the bowl. Do I need to worry about the other Hen wanting to kill the chick? Can I move Mum, Dad and the bowl into the other cage without upsetting them too much? Any advise on what to do now would really be appreciated now I've got a chick I don't want to lose it.. Should I put something in the bowl to stop the chick having issues from the Stainless Steel making it too cold etc??
  19. Hi All Need some advice I have a pair who have been breeding we don't have any nesting boxes in the Aviary, a while ago I posted about her laying in our feeder, we changed the feeder and for a while she stopped laying. In the last few weeks she's started again, once again laying in the seed dishes, different one to what we had before, or in most cases she's laying while sitting on the perches. The whole time she was emptying all the seed containers, chewing on the sides of them, being destructive really. Last week we separated them, she's now in a cage on her own. She's still trying to empty the seed trays in the cage, again they are different to the ones in the aviary, but they are deep, so I've only been putting a layer in the bottom so she can't really get the seed out. She's seams okay now, still in breeding condition, so I don't want to put her back in until I can work out what to do to stop them. What are my options? Please help.... Bel
  20. When I filled the seed and water on Wednesday there was no eggs, but on Saturday arvo there was two, I got home pretty late on Thursday & Friday so I didn't get the chance to check on them. We've not separated her, but when I get home tomorrow we'll do so, how long should I separate her for??
  21. Well we changed the feeder now she's just laying the eggs on the floor and leaving them.... we found two this morning, both had been smashed....
  22. Need to ask another question about the same two Birds from my last post, on Friday morning when I checked on the birds they had emptied the hanging seed feeder, I wasn't sure why so I pulled it out to have a look, inside was this tiny egg, so I took it out and refilled the seed. Hubbie and I where away for most of the weekend, when we got home I checked the seed, once again they'd emptied it, and Patch was sitting on the top of it while Banjo was keeping the others away. We pulled it out and as suspected she had laid another egg inside, this one is twice the size of the first one. We improvised a cover for the top of the seed feeder so they can't lay in there any more but I'm guessing that won't stop her finding somewhere else to lay?. Do I need to take the Hen (Patch) out and put her in another cage? If so do I put Him (Banjo) with her? I don't really want them breeding but if she keeps laying eggs do I just keep taking them away?? Ta for any advice. B
  23. Kaz, I took those nesting boxes out within days of putting the birds in the aviary. I've no intention of breading, hence once you all told be the risk of having the Nesting boxes in the aviary I took them out... the aviary only has perchs in it these days, here is an updated picture so you can see the boxes are out. I'm just concerned because Banjo is chasing Patch around the aviary to feed her, it looks like he's not letting her feed for herself. here's a picture of the two of them...
  24. It is normal? one of my Cocks (Banjo) has been feeding one of my Hens (Patch) I thought it was just a one time thing but I've noticed he's been doing it all the time the last few days (home on Hoildays more time to sit and watch them all play). Is there anything wrong with him doing this? Ta Bel
