  1. Thanks guys. Greencheeks normally are pretty friendly, but when it comes to nests and babies (Greencheeks or other species) they become totally feral and agressive and seek to anhilate (sp?) the competition, even if it means killing the parents who get in the way. Not much I can do now.... It turned out to be a good thing I cleaned out the budgie half of the aviary, because I have a rescued galah coming in today. I'll post him/her in my rescues thread. Thanks for your kind words guys. Those were the last of my offspring for this round. We have 6 fledgelings in the other aviary, and that's it. I gave away the remaining babies to a friend to handraise. Being so cold here in Melbourne now, I'm not sure if the budgies will go down again. We'll see.
  2. Oh yay! Congratulations! My partner can't have children, I wish I could get that news .
  3. I have a large aviary divided into 2 separated by a door. Budgies in one half, Greencheeks in the other. The previous owner made the divider out of chicken wire, which wasn't too smart. I had no idea Greencheeks could chew through it though  . They did kill and shred up a couple of quails a few months back, but that was when they had babies and were defensive of their territory. But once we sold the babies they left the quails alone. I cleaned up the ugly mess this morning and boarded up the whole chicken wired side of the wall. The Greencheeks are normally really well behaved- I don't know what posessed them to chew through the wire suddenly today when they've never showed any interest in the budgies til now. The remaining living budgies have been moved to another aviary. Sigh.
  4. This morning I came out to my aviaries to discover the pair of Greencheeks had chewed through the wire in the internal wall and got into my budgies. By the time I discovered I found it, the Greencheeks had killed 4 baby budgies and wounded another, plus wounded 2 hens . Dead shredded babies were strewn everywhere . 2 hens were attacked while defending their nests and their babies. One hen had her foot bitten up pretty bad, the other had her entire beak ripped off. One of the three surviving babies had such severe head injuries that both he and the beak injured mum had to be put out of their misery by my friend. I don't know if the other hen will survive. The 2 remaining orphaned babies I took in a hurry to my friend who handraises birds because I have no other nesting hens at the moment. I'm so distraught- the attacked hens were 2 my best breeders. Byebye Scone and babies  . (Scone on the right)
  5. Phew, good. Cause the kid my daughter shared a room with was a little . Let me know if I can do anything to help .
  6. Oh that's so sad to hear, sorry . I lost some babies today, but that seems like nothing compared to the amount you've lost. On a side note, your son's name isn't Declan is it? My daughter had tonsil surgery last week and shared a room with a boy with that name.
  7. Yep, I did that once when I had no formula when a baby was orphaned once. Looks and smells the same. It's not as good long term, but if you have to use it a few times when you run out, it's fine.
  8. I'd be more worried about myself and my family catching it. If we did come down with it, the budgies would be the last thing on my mind.
  9. Will do. This should be funny .On the bath subject, is there any way you can bathe them besides providing water? I have about 6 budgies which need a proper wash. They were given to me not long ago and for some reason absolutely stink. It's like a dirty unwashed smell, it's just wrong. Like nothing I've ever smelt on a bird. They've been wormed and sprayed for mites/lice etc and are quarantined, but I've got not no idea what's causing it. Any ideas? Rahahaha just found Dave's beetroot budgie pictures from last year .
  10. I always buy Ruby unshelled peanuts that are grown for human consumption.
  11. There are 20 pet shops in your area? Wow. Almost every pet shop here stocks hand rearing formula.
  12. I've never tried it on them. Anyone got any photos of beetroot stained budgies?
  13. That's funny, we just call them unshelled peanuts. My Eclectus loves shelling them. I've never thought to give them to my budgies.
  14. I don't think the monkeys would be too happy about that..... . Seriously, what's a monkey nut? :glare:
  15. I just thought the same thing. Would you want to try that Pearce?
  16. I'm not sure yet. They're so much fun, and I don't want to separate them now they're so friendly, so I'll just see what happens. Thanks for the links Maesie. I did actually try that first one- that's what Bobble is wearing in the pictures. I think I'll have to get an old sock and cut holes for wings and put that on him. It might work better because his back is completely bare. He hasn't got a single feather on his body except his tail, wings and head.
  17. Yeah both of these are tame enough to let me touch and pat them. Plus when I come in with their nectar dish they go nuts and jump on it and start drinking before I get a chance to put it down.
  18. I haven't had a lorikeet in 10 years- I forgot how much fun they are. Noisy!!!!!!!! But fun . They get this lunatic look in their eyes when their pupils shrink and they puff up and make kissing noises and bounce up and down wolf whistling. They're totally nuts, I love it . That's not a bad idea, making Bobble's clothes in 2 pieces. Maybe I can make the bottom half by cutting up some of Kimberley's Barbie undies . I did initially try putting a knitted doll dress on it but it was way too big . Has anyone here had to make a cocky jumper before?
  19. Yeah I've got a real soft spot for Bobble . I tried to make him a warm birdy jumper thing this evening, and failed pretty miserably . The first attempted was pretty bad, and this second attempt isn't much better. But it'll do for tonight, til I can make a better one tomorrow. Poor bugger looks angry . But at least he's warm. Imagine being out there in this weather completely naked . Okay don't laugh too much at my bird-jumper making skills . Chewy and the other unnamed lorikeet got put in their new aviary today after being cage to cage to get used to eachother. They're instant best friends and totally nuts. Because both were once tame pets (from different homes), they were both taught wolf whistles, dog calling whistles, same kissy noises, etc so they do them to eachother it's adorable. And they both seem to love me. I come into the aviary and can't tell who is who til one jumps on my shoulder and puffs up and declares "HELLO CHEWY!" ....... They're gonna need more toys and bigger dishes. One tried to bath in the little drinking dish as soon as I put it in, and the other ripped out the nectar dish just for fun. They squeal and jump up and down like kids on sugar, running up and down the perches and playing with bell balls. What dags they are. I love them already .
  20. A friend of mine builds them from old bookshelves. Depending how wide the shelf is, he usually divides each shelf vertically about 1/3 way across and puts a cage front on the bigger part and a door on the smaller part to make a nesting box. Make sense? It worked really well for him .
  21. There are all sorts of birds that are suitable to tame. The tame birds I have are 3 Quakers, a Lovebird and an Eclectus. Mind you, they all hate eachother . If you want them to remain tame while becoming friends with eachother, I'd suggest a timid Cockatiel or a Grass parrot. There aren't that many types of birds that get along with tame budgies.
  22. I placed both rainbow lorikeet cages next to eachother, and they went ape with excitement! Both started jumping up and down, wolf whistled at eachother, and started talking. Not sure what words they were. I think they're gonna make great friends .
