  1. I wish there were some of you guys here in Wagga! Have to rely on pet shop as no breeders around that I know of, apart from one not too far away that has show types, but as far as pet types go, it's pet shop or nothing!
  2. hi, i have a pair that have 4 chicks, aged 39, 36, 34 & 28 days. The oldest 3 are out of the box, eating & drinking & helping to feed chick 4 who is yet to come out. Mum & dad have been mating & I was wondering if it is okay to add another box to the cage, it's pretty big, so mum can have her 2nd clutch without evicting bub. Mum has egg bum, so due to lay soon? So, do I add another box, remove mum to a separate cage or what??? Any advice would be great.
  3. Hi Finnie, Pics of other newbies as requested Sam Olive Ozzie Piper, pity the bright purple on his butt doesn't show.
  4. managed to get another cere picture. White around nostrils is girl isn't it? I will get it right eventually! Liv & Kaz, yes she is in quarantine, with 4 others i got at the same time.
  5. Hi everyone, I just picked this little boy (I think) from the local petshop & I have no idea what his mutation is, any ideas?
  6. Hi everyone, Just had to share some pics of my 1st clutch! Baby 1 at 26 days, cobalt like daddy Baby 2 at 23 days, YF2 like mummy but cinnamon? Baby 3 at 21 days, albino! Baby 4 at 21 days, not sure yet! Would love to know what you guys think they are & if my guesses are right. Debbie
  7. oh, I have so much to learn! I never in a million years thought my 2 "purplies" would have an albino baby!
  8. Hi my 8 day old baby has opened it's eyes & what a surprise to find out they are red! It's body is all pink with only white pin feathers, the other babies have dark eyes with mixed dark & pink skin. Is it albino? Don't one of both parents need to be albino's for this? here are Mum & Dad Mum Dad
  9. so I should get some nice "purples"! Colony breeding yes, but mum won't let anyone else near her. I don't mind a few surprises, I'm not breeding for anything in particular, they just seem to have paired up nicely, except for a violet hen that has 3 boys after her & 1 boy that has 3 girls! They are a close knit little flock that have been together for quite a while & all seem to feed each other whenever they feel like it. Fingers crossed so far no major fights, just some little quarrels.
  10. Hi, Here are pics of Mummy & Daddy that have 4 babies.Dad (Fonzie) is a real purple colour. Mum (Christie) is a YF2? her body colour is a mottle blue/purple/green colour.Any ideas what their 4 babies are going to be? Sorry pics aren't very clear. Debbie Christie Fonzie Another picture of Christie as she ducked out for a quick feed while dad was in the box.
  11. Thanks for that Kaz, Could the warmer weather also mean she doesn't need to be in there as much? I did notice that although she is out, she is not very far away for very long & pops her head in quite often. She is a 1st time mum & I have only been checking in the box once a day(fighting the desire to check every 5 mins of course!) to make sure she doesn't get too upset. I hope this isn't too much for me to check? Debbie
  12. Hi, I have a hen who has 3 babies, ages 10, 7 & 5 days who all seem to be growing beautifully so far, but I have noticed that the hen has started spending more time out of her box. Is this normal or has she had enough? This is my 1st lot of babies & I have no idea what to expect so any help would be great! Debbie
  13. Hi Everyone, This is going to sound like a really stupid question, but is it possible for a hen to be more "sexed" than other hens? i have a beautiful violet hen that seems to attract nearly all the boys when she is in breeding condition, even cocks that already have mates! She has a favourite mate, but whenever they are mating, the poor cock has other cocks trying to mate with him! Is there anything, apart from removing her, which I really don't want to do, that I can do to stop this? This happens even when there are no boxes in sight! I am worried that I may lose some of my boys from fighting over her. Debbie
  14. Hi all. I noticed yesterday morning that one of my hens was grounded. On having a look at her I noticed she had a wing feather, (not sure if it was a flight feather but must have been because she had trouble flying), coming through with the shaft around it. It would have been about 3 inches long with the feathers poking out the end. Anyway, I thought nothing of it, but when I checked her yesterday evening she was covered in blood! She was very weak and let me take her out of the aviary. I had to wash her so I could see where the end the feather was as she had bitten it til it was only a few millimeters long! I managed to get the bit out and the bleeding stopped straight away. I put her in the cage inside where it is warm and dark and she seems okay this morning, a bit puffed up but she is chirping and eating. Anyway, I was just wondering how long I should leave her inside and is there anything I can give her to make sure she recovers? Debbie
  15. Hi all, Having managed to get through the 3 odd weeks of over 40 degree heat in summer, I was wondering how my little buddies are going to cope in winter? It got down to -2 here last night and I haven't been game to go out and check yet but there seems to be the normal amount of morning noise coming from the aviary. Apart from the tin parts, all parts of the aviary open to wind and rain are covered with a tarp, so even with the rain we've had lately, it has stayed dry inside, I'm just worried that they will freeze. Will they be okay? Anything else I need to do or give them to get through the cold nights? P.S. The silly Tiels are still sleeping out in the open flight, so I figure they must be a bit tougher than the budgies??? Debbie
  16. Unfortunately all chicks that hatched died. 5 hatched, 2 eggs were infertile and the remaining 3 fertile eggs were kinda hard boiled. She had laid them when it was stinking hot, not sure if that had something to do with the chicks dieing but they never lived past a week. they were also in the aviary so not sure if another bird attacked them? One thing is for sure - NO MORE COLONY BREEDING FOR ME!
  17. No....its a fat perch thing. My aviary has thicker than normal sized perches. She sits well on normal sized perches That's okay then! I have big "sticks" in my aviary too. Is it bad for them?
  18. Gorgeous birds Kaz, I noticed the toes on this one (hen??) I have a hen that has her toes sit sideways like that, not backwards, is it okay or a genetic thing? Debbie
  19. the vet gave me Air Sac Mite Treatment, doesn't actually say what is in it but I guess it's not ivermectin!
  20. hi, Just wondering if anyone knows how long it takes for quail eggs to hatch? My little Mildred is currently sitting on 4 eggs, most of which seemed to appear overnight! Do they have the same incubation time as budgies? Debbie
  21. Hi, Just wondering if it is normal to treat birds with scaly face once a week for 3 weeks? I thought it was a one off treatment or does it depend on what you use? Debbie
  22. Hi KAZ, He works here: Bye Street Vet clinic 3 Bye St Wagga Wagga NSW 2650 - ph: (02) 6925 6222 which is also Vetafarm! His name is Tony Gestier.
  23. thanks to KAZ, who recommended I treat my new boy for scaly face, of course I had to take him to the vet. Lucky for me there is an Avian Vet about 5 mins away from me! I took Wesley down and the vet looked him over and said yep, early scaly face so he showed me how to treat him and to do all the other birds. So home I went and my hubby and I caught all 17 budgies, popped them in a cage then treated the 4 tiels. Only minor war wounds! As we did the budgies one by one I gave them a check over while hubby held them and I noticed that my beautiful Violet had a HUGE lump near her preen gland. So, into the travel box she went and back down to the vet who took me into his "secret room" where he had a look and decided feather cysts as she was too young for a tumour. So he pierced two and got all the yuck out, got me to do the third :fear and luckily the 4th fell off. So all up I had seen the vet twice in the one day and the best thing was, he only charged me for the scaly face treatment! What an absolutely top bloke and I feel so lucky to have him so close. Just wanted you all to know that there definately are good people out there. Debbie
  24. I have a few birds with flecking and think they are gorgeous!
