  1. Well, 15 is about as cold as it will get all winter, it will be about 23 during the day, and the aviary is pretty sheltered, no wind or anything like that, and the house would be nearly as cold anyway... I'll feel them and if they are nice and fat I might just put them out...
  2. Because I had 2 birds in the aviary, then one had to be euthanised and the remaining one is quite lonely, so I thought I would move the indoor ones outside to keep it company. But if it's a bad idea then obviously I'm not gonna do it.
  3. Right, I will have to have a feel then. Thanks.
  4. Cool, just checking, don't want them to get sick:)
  5. Just wondering if it's too cold for an indoor budgie to move outside to an aviary when it gets down to 15 at night? Still nice and warm during the day...
  6. Birds can't fly by, the whole backyard is enclosed by catnetting, and they can't see anything above them because of the roof:) So even if they did get out, it would take them a while to figure out how to get through the catnetting.
  7. Thanks:) Yes everthing was painted before we put it together, to prevent it all rotting. I have updated the album with photos of the birds in the aviary. I don't think I will need anything to cover the door, because they are very tolerant of my presence and just sit and look at me whenever I go in there.
  8. Thanks:) There is a roof, but the bottom of it will still get wet when it rains, and when it rains sideways the sides will get wet too.
  9. Yes, the paint is heavy metal free, so it should be perfectly safe. But if they pick it off the wood will rot, unless I constantly paint over exposed wood.
  10. If they chew all the paint off, how do most people solve the problem of using untreated wood? If it's not painted it will rot...
  11. Thanks:) I am pleased with it. I never thought it would look this good when finished, and a lot of that is thanks to my partner because he's such a perfectionist and will re-do anything until it looks perfect, even if it means the construction takes twice as long.. My partner's dad told us it looks professionally made, so we are kind of proud of that:)

    Our Aviary

My partner and I built an aviary last week. The birds haven't gone in yet, hoping to get them in either today or tomorrow. There are only two of them, and they currently live in a cage in our patio area. Here are the photos: http://mykewlphotos.com/chapter.php?id=61&album_id=10 Total cost: about $350. That includes the concrete.
  13. How do you attach the netting to the inside of the frame? Anyone have any photos of how they constructed their aviaries?
  14. So how do I know which paints are safe? What do I look for?
  15. Thanks, that's pretty much everything I need to know, but if anyone has anything to add feel free
  16. Just wondering what type of wood people use, what netting, what paint etc, and where you get it all from, when you build avieries? I have been reading old posts in the forum, but I can't see any that say specifically what materials were used, just that they used 'non-toxic' paint or something general like that. I don't really know what paints are non-toxic and which are toxic, so if anyone could give me some specific names of paints and type of wood etc, that would be appreciated. Thanks:)
  17. The bird in question died Monday night. She was eating, 10 minutes later she was thrashing around, then she died a few minutes after that. I was planning on calling the vet first thing Tuesday morning. There is no way I can keep the other bird for a month, she is already screaming and driving me mad. I'm sure whoever buys her will quarantine her, as recommended.
  18. I will be selling the remaining bird and cage seperately, they are too flimsy and delicate for my taste. Hoping to find a nice outdoor aviary for the remaining one, where she can live with other budgies like she was used to before I adopted her. The cage is being sold seperately so that no one will keep her alone in it. I've posted in the budgie for sale section, and will update with more info and photos in a little while.
  19. The bird is now dying, because we couldn't get to the vet today. I talked to an expert on cockatiels earlier today, and she said it could be a cold, and that as long as she's eating she's prolly fine. She was eating 15 minutes ago, and now she's dying. Im not gonna keep birds anymore.
  20. I have concluded that it's a respiratory infection. I'll take her to the vet for treatment. This is a video from about an hour ago..
  21. I just noticed her vent is covered in poo, like the other one was before it died. The poo on the paper looks completely normal tho. I just noticed she seems to be breathing quite heavily and makes kind of a rasping sound when breathing. So that means some kind of respitory thing maybe? I need to take her to the vet, but they charge over $100 for a consultation, which I don't have, tests and meds will be even more. Anyone know a good, cheap avian vet in northern Brisbane?
  22. Yes, they were both treated for parasites. She's eating, but she's still sleeping most of the time, no change from yesterday really. I have no other cage to put her in, but I've kept the room warm and the cage partially covered.
  23. Both feet are on the perch, eyes are closed some of the time. She's missing all of her flight feathers on one wing, but I didn't think it was time for her to molt again so soon....
  24. I haven't been on for a while, as nothing interesting has been happening with my two budgies. I don't suppose anyone would remember me, but we rescued two budgies last year which had been left to die in an aviary when the owners of the house moved. One of the budgies died after a couple months in my care, so we bought a new young one at the pet store to keep the remaining one company. They've both been fine for about 6 months now. This new budgy is now looking all puffy and seems sleepier than normal. I noticed it yesterday but thought she might be cold, but it's not really that cold in my office... She seems to be eating normally, but is constantly puffed up.. Is this serious, do we need to see a vet about it? Anything I can do for her?
  25. The newspaper is below the grate, but some of the poo sticks to the grate. But she's not sick so she should be fine I guess.
